Turbo's on my 350 4 bolt main????
Turbo's on my 350 4 bolt main????
I have an '83 TA. The original 305 was replaced with a 350. I was told that it was a 350 4 bolt main, but I am going to find out for sure. Well it is a carborated engine. Im only 16, so sorry if i dont know that much about my car and its engine, but im trying to learn. Well any way, I was thinking about putting turbo's on my car. I can get my hands on some turbo's from my neighbors 4 cylinder 89 turbo thunderbird. Will these turbo's be too weak? How much should i actually pay for the turbos? Are there any turbo's made for my engine? Am I going to hurt my engine in any way by adding turbos? I was also thinking about looking for a supercharger instead. Would a super charger from a Dodge Daytona work? Please let me know. Thanks.
Please do a search using the word "turbo". Lots of threads for you to read...

right away im gonna have to say no too a ford turbocharger and no to a dodge turbocharger. just because....ITS FORD AND DODGE! duh.
i dont believe its thats simple to just say here let me take this from here and slap it over yonder.
like the man said above, search for "turbo" and do some readin.
this wasnt meant to be a flame..as bad as it may sound. we all started somewhere.

those t-bird turbos would make more power than a 16 year old kid should have a right to. if your savy enough and know how to weld a little(or know someone who can) you can build a bad *** blow thru system and have a fast car on relatively low boost. use a set of shorty type headers, flip'em around and build your pipes from there. i would'nt pay much more than $50 or so apiece for the turbos. you'll also need a good fuel system.

Ummm. A T-bird turbo can barely feed a 2.3 liter 4 banger, so its not gonna be enough for a 350 chevy.
Get these books...
1- "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes
2- "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell
Read them from COVER TO COVER. Do it twice (hell, I've read them at least 5 times) and then you will have a good general understanding about turbos. Oh, even though this goes against my "Pro Anti-Rice" mentality, read Turbo magazine. They've had some good turbo related technical articles in the past. Just throw away the rest of the crap thats in the magazine. And dont believe that Honda VTEC engines can make 500 HP on 93 octane pump gas! Do not be fooled by the Rice.

Should i get turbos, or should i get a supercharger? Is a turbocharger the same thing? Sorry to keep asking these questions, but i am new to this stuff. Will my engine be able to handle mods like this? How much will it cost? Thanks. Also, what types of cars can i take out turbo's, turbo chargers, and superchargers out of from junk yards in order to put in my car?

A turbocharger and supercharger are 2 different ways to force more air into the engine. The turbo is fed by the exhaust gasses which then turns a "fan" at super high speeds in order to force the air in. A supercharger is spun by a pulley connected to the crank. It also forces more air into the engine by turning a fan at super high speeds.
There is no direct kit for a turbo like there is for a super. In order to put a turbo in right you will have to do lots of research. It is possible to jerry rig a turbo from a thunderbird but it most likely won't run right. If you are serious buy some books on it. I think there is one by Corkey Bell, its really good. What kind of intake do yo have? I assume that since its an 83 its carbed. There are no supercharger kits available (to my knowledge) i am also pretty sure there arn't any turbo kits either. You would have to custom fab an air cleaner housing and then mess with jets till the cows come home.
If you do decide to do this, you should run low boost... say 7 PSI. Your engine isn't designed for it. You should lower the compression ratio and swap the cam.
If i were you i would go nitrous. Its a lot easier to set up and there are kits readilty available.
Sorry its long, i hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate your help. It isnt the original engine that came stock in the car. But still, I dont want to run nitrous(or at least not at this time). I will think more about it. Thanks.

Like some other people said, go read books on the subjects your interested in. Read a lot of them and read them all the way through. Just from what I can see right now, forget the turbo idea. To do it right would cost you thousands of dollars. Trust me, i looked into it for my car. A supercharger maybe, but again, read some books on the subject first. Forced induction is a good way to get more horse power, but you definitly cant go into it blind. Good luck man.

Ok possible to run 2 of them off the thunderchicken i dont know whats up with the guy saying stuff wont interchange sorry ford and dodge do not make turbos the ones on that thunderchicken are either IHI if its auto and would be too small to bother with but a manual pair which are Garett T3's could be worth the time and it will take a lot of fabbing, look on ebay for "turbocharger" "sbc turbo" and things like that there are a few older single turbo kits that would make it easier, hope this helps.
