a question for Askulte, intercooler?

I saw your intercooler pics and was wondering if that cooler could suport up to 1000hp? I'am hoping to get my headers built this summer by speedway and the two T-04 and racegates mounted. I would like to do the cooler and plumbing myself. I also would mount it a little lower so i can use my harwood, I don't want a liftoff hood. Any suggestions on an intercooler? How much $ for a spearco that will work? Do you have any pics of the intercooler all plumbed up I would like to see just how you did all the plumbing? Thanks Matt

Matt,
Take a look at http://andris.fbody.com/IC for the latest pics. I haven't put together the IC construction page, but it should give you an idea.

I'm not sure how companies rate them for HP, but my 3.5x15.6x20 Spearco 2-182 core http://www.spearcointercoolers.com/stdcores.htm is rated for 1500 cfm, which is big as Spearco makes them. It should do 1000 hp np I'm running 2.5" mandrel bent piping to the merge, and then 3" in/out of the intercooler. I'm finishing the merge tonight, and the IC should be all done! HTH.

Andris
PS-I just got my radiator from Tony Dequick at chargedair.com, and it looks amazing! It's a low fin density model which does better with lower flow since the front mount IC is there. Add two Spal 2300 cfm fans, and it's ready to roll!

I enjoyed the pics on the buildup. are you using "standard" aluminized mandrel bent exhaust tubing & just cutting & weling to fit? where are you getting the tubing from? I think that you are on the right coast are you not?

thanks

One more question, Did you have to cut 3 inch holes in the car where the 3inch piping goes toward the intercooler and then back out the cold side by the light assembly? I looked for the pics you posted a month ago or so and it won't download the pics.

Bob - out here in NY and Boston. The aluminum mandrel bends are from Burns Stainless (in CA) and were very pricey - about $25-$50 per U-bend. I bought the straight pipe locally. I did buy a whole bunch of aluminized steel mandrel bends (about $150 worth) which I haven't touched since I decided to go with AL. It's all sitting in a box if ya want it.

Supah - You could mount a little lower, but I didn't want to go below the bottom frame rail. My intercooler really is overkill. You can go smaller. I'm thinking of adapting the Cherokee hood latches - they have one on each front corner of the hood. Yes - I did cut those 4" dia holes for the 3" pipe to pass through.

thanks for the information. they are "right up the street" from me. did you go with aluminum for weight, or heat disipation or both?

thanks again?

I don't really know why I went with aluminum. It's a ton more expensive. Weight savings are probably 10-15 lbs. I bought the steel mandrel bends, and then a friend had some AL U-bends I bought from him. One thing led to another... You know how it goes

A.

PS-IC system is finished! I dropped the lower sheetmetal brace that the radiator rests on in order to fit it into the "recess" rather than behind it. It was welded back on the sides with some 1/8" steel to keep the strength. Going back outside now to finish the radiator install and cooling fans.

15 lbs over the front axel is a good bit, but im thinking that the next size up pill on the N2O will fix that right up. think that it is worth the $, when push comes to shove?

thanks for the input. if you have not check out my comments in the "turbo kits, why not" post, about my visit to JBA today, i would be interested in your input.

& yea, i think that we all know how that goes. that is how we all ended up here

thanks
