Think one of my turbos needs a rebuild..questions.

I've been having a problem with my new engine smoking like a ****. I was beginning to suspect a screwed up ring or something..but the thought occured that it may be a leaking turbo. Closer inspection revealed that the wheelwell where my one turbos outlet faces, is coated in a black oily substance, and there is even oil visible in the turbos outlet itself. Is it likely to be leaking oil into the exaust too, causing my problem?

Also..where can I get a rebuild kit, and how much should I expect to pay? Or would I be better off getting a new turbo? The shaft still spins freely..and it does spool up.

How old is/are the turbo's? It might be time for it. If one is doing it quite bad but the other not makes me think that there might be a problem with the drain line for the turbo. if the drain line has a blockage the oil has to go somewhere & it is going to be through the seal.

Both turbos are junkyard specials from the late 80's...so they hav some age. It's entirely possible that one of the return lines got a kink or something..I'll look at that closer today.

May still need a rebuild tho too.

I just went out and checked..and the offending turbos return line had shifted and gotten a kink in it. I replaced it..and it is smoking alot less..and took longer to start smoking. It may still be leaking to a lesser extent..or it may just take time for the oil already there to burn off. I'll have drive it more to find out...thanks for the tip.

I may still need to rebuild it tho..if anyone knows a good source for a rebuild kit.

Jester,

You might want to take the lines off of the turbo & see if the passage into & out of the turbo looks clear. I have seen pictures of "coked" up turbos that actually looked like they would restrict oil flow. if that is the case then it might still be restricting the flow out of the turbo even though once it is out it flow well. If that is the case you might need a rebuild anyway, so............. dont know.

I dont have a recomendation on the rebuild, possibly back to the mfg? Or it might be cheaper just to goto the wrecker & get another one.?.?.?

well..my turbo just solved that. I just drove it around the block.....and halfway around the turbo started spewing oil...it's toast.

DEFINATLY needs a rebuild..at the very least.

Oh wipe that stupid grin off your face. I knew going in thats the risk you take when you buy a junkyard turbo for $60. That, plus at worst $100 for a rebuiuld kit, is still better than any deal you can make I'm willing to bet.

Is that what the smirks are about? Spend another $60 & have a good time. This is not about who can spend the most money 'cause we all lose there, Leno & alen & Jackson have the upper hand on that, its about haveing a good time & playing with our toys, enjoy it, dont be a slave to it.
