this ever happen to you (t-stat woes)

hey guys, anyways, when i installed my paxton supercharger on my 91trans am (350 tpi) i decided to put a 160degree thermostat in it as well. when i initially put it in, i just used the recomended gasket without any silicon. well, shortly thereafter (about three days) the t-stat housing started leaking again so i pulled it off and noticed that i had blown part of the gasket out. so i scrapped the mating surfaces and used just "right stuff" silicon without any gasket, along with drilling two small holes on either side of the flange of the t-stat. well, its been about 200miles, and it looks as though it's leaking yet again, so i guess my question is WHAT AM I DOING WRONG HERE?

can anyone hepl me out. thanks guys

mike

Thermostat housing gasket

I just replaced one yeasterday that had been on my car for about three years with no leaks. I used a gasket and high temp silicone on both sides.

FYI.

Try this ...

FelpPro Part No.#2202 Water Outlet Gasket - SB/BB Chevy - 1/8" thick - Plastic Construction with Rubber O-Ring.

Spendy but worth it AND it's re-useable. No more tubes of goop.

Leaky T-stat housing

Cooling problems are the bane of this car as I found out. It seems like a constant battle against heat. But, they were designed to run hot. In any case, I found high temp RTV sealer worked well as I mentioned in a previous post. It also has the advantage of being easy to remove. You don't need a scaper and hard application to get it off.

An interesting thing happened to my last T-stat which was a 190 degree. When I pulled the housing off, the T-stat was in pieces. Literally. I had to pick the parts out of the manifold. I switched to a 170 degree unit. We'll see how it goes.

Good luck on your leak issue.
Ed.

Leak

I think you are OK, just keep an eye on the coolant level. You can usually smell leaking coolant easily or see vapors. Pop the hood from time to time to check it.

I am installing the Hayden 3652 to see how that works running the fans. I think all my leak trouble is under control.

Paxton Supercharger

Hello carbed87,

How is that Paxton working for you? Did you install it yourself? What kind of performance difference do you see?. Doe's your car seem to run hotter? Intercooler?

Thanks, Ed.

yes, i did install the kit myself. it doesn't come with an intercooler, i'd like to buy one, but i dont think they make 'em for my app. there was a huge difference in power. i raced a 4th gen lt1 that put down 322to the wheels, and pulled it by about a car and a half. so yeah, im pretty satisfied with how it performs.

and now that i put that 160* thermostat in there, it's running much cooler.

oh, and it's for sale if anyone wants to buy it.
