Comp cams guys on crack?
I told them I'm building a forged 383 with AFR's and a procharger and looking for 1000hp. He emails me specs for a 255/262@.050 with .575 lift on a 114 lobe. Seems small to me.

Not to defend Comp or any of the other cam guys but!!!!!!!
One thing that you need to think of is how many people call up every day with pretty much stock stuff and say I want to make a 1000 horse. They get these people who read a few magazine articals and then say will I can do that with a few bolt ons and such.
The tech guys on the "cam help desk" are for the most part flunkies who answer the phone and do not really know much. They flip open the catalog and find something that will rumble and maybe make some good power. The reason that I say this is when you call up looking for something like what your looking for and they are really just blowing you off.
The real people that you need to talk to are the people who are at the Performance Industry Racing shows or the SEMA shows.
Those are the guys who know what it really takes to make real power!
Over the years i have made good contacts at those shows and aslo learned why the major engine builders all go there. Without connections like these you just get run of the mill stuff and stuff that is available to just the regular public.
The other thing is if your really talking about 1000 horse. Your talking about aftermarket block, billet crank & rods, and other really high end parts. Otherwise your just looking at a few pass wonder.
Please note I just trying to shed some light as I have had this conversation for many years while I was in the industry. Scooter @ Comp is a great guy and I run one of his custom cams in my dragster.
I agree with you for what you are looking to do that cam is way too small!!
Just my 2c.

It is impossible to guess at the cam and HP level with the limited info you posted. That cam can easily make 1000HP with a decent setup.
Check out this thread:

Then do a search to see what that combo made for RWHP. I think you will like what you find.

How do you know that cam is no good? Did you give him a rpm range? Making 1000hp is pretty much dependent on the amount of boost you will run. Did you tell him how much. Picking the cam for that level is a stab in the dark and will take trial and error to get it right. That cam gives you something to start with.

I filled out their online "Cam request" form with all the info I could think of, except the flow #'s on the heads. I think I should have called instead. I'm using a Dart little M fully studded, Scat 383 forged crank and rods, forged JE 8.2:1 pistons. AFR 195's, HSR, big injectors with a procharger pushing 15 to 20+psi. 1.6 chromemoloy roller rockers, F.A.S.T. XFI, headers, bla.bla. I was thinking of a solid roller cam. The 1000 hp was a number spit out by a rep @ procharger. Anywere near that would be great. What do you all think? Thanks for the input.

r u sure ur little 700 r4 is going to handle anything above 700 hp and 20 psi is relly quite intnse i hape you have a lot of money i think a cam with around 265 is good for running that boost i also hope you have an after market 12 bolt or some wicked strong rear end

That is a very nice setup that you are building. One that is worth having a conversation with a cam person that understands boost. I called Comp Cams and the guy didn't know anything except for listing the "normal" turbo cam. It was a waste of time for both of us.
Search here and the turbomustangs board to get a feel for what you need. Then call Cam Motion, Ultradyne, or any cam manufacturer that will give you the time you need to explain what you want. You might want to hit up 83 Crossfire TA here. He is one of the best that I know of for picking cam specs. Day and night better than any normal phone tech person.

Were we even talking about drivetrain? Yeah I was hoping 83 Crossfire TA would put his 2 cents in. I think the lift is ok but the duration seems conservative for me. I'm running EFI with the XFI so I told them I wasnt concerned about driveability because it was tuneable. I also thought the 114 lobe was weak. But I dont know everthing about cams let alone boost cams.

Fill out his spec sheet first and foremost, he'll be sure to get ahold of you! He puts together some screaming combinations.
He's a moderator at yellowbullet.com. They have a ton of combos over there similar to what you want to do.

I'll have to agree with some of the other guys. Even though I am far from an expert, seems like everything I read about boost tells me a mild to moderate cam is best for boosted applications. And like mkos1980 said it will also depend on the ratio of the rocker arms. Also have to agree with comp788, my wife's cousin is building a stroked twin turbo Mustang that the engine builder says will make around 1100 horses...his block alone was 5 grand.

I called comp iski and a few others and finally went with lunati the guy i talked to figured everything out on the phone. It almost drove me crazy talking to him he had everything figured out in about 15min from head flow to intake. If i got another custom cam i dont think i would go anywere else it is my second cam from those guys and no problems.

how about you lay off on the canadian comments. Seems we could easily start up with the ignorant useless american comments just by looking at your posts.
