Cheap And Easy
Cheap And Easy
hello, i recently purchased a 1989 Camaro 305 V8. i am 16 and am learning on most work on cars. i have done a few body panels and am ready to start on engines. i have stripped a couple and put them back together. i am curious on what i can do to make my car faster but keep my bucks low.
i have been suggested to get a shift kit (trans kit), the chip/ computer, and a posi drive train 4.11 . i will be doing most the work with a friend or two. i am just curious on what i should be looking for and what may be the best solution. thanks in advance.

First off, welcome to TGO!
secondly this is the wrong section! Try the TBI forum!
But here's my $.02
Don't put 4.10's in car if it has an auto (700r4) because it has a very low 1st gear. I would suggest 3.73 gears and a posi unit shift kit would be ok if the trans doesnt need a rebuild. You could also try to find an S-10 torque converter which has a higher stall speed (2025 i believe) Im also assuming its an RS and has TBI (kinda looks like a carb). A set of lakewood LCA's can be had for about $90 which will help with Wheelhop (had the same problem in my 89 rs 305 car). A set of headers and a catback will help out alot too. There isnt too many more mods that you really want to do to it because its only a 305. This should get you started.

yes you got me. haha Well it has a set of Edelbrock headers already installed with an exhaust system on too. i dont know the brand of pipes used.
but a 3.73 gears and a posi unit shift kit sounds nice. what is the LCA's thouse are tires i suppose. one last thing is, should i still look in to a chip? im just tryin to keep it street fun, not so much runnin on the track often.
thanks for the help.

Re: Cheap And Easy
yeah "lower control arms" will stiffen up the rear end and help those tires grip better also if you wanna spend another 150 bucks you should get some subframe connectors look em up. there are alot of things you can do to the motor but i wouldnt get to involved in the 305 cuz youll most likely end up disapointed so if i were you right now i would focus on stiffeneing up the body and get that thing to act like its got more power than i actually does. you can get an Msd 6 or 6al box cuz most ignition stuff is interchangable oh yeah and get rid of all the excess weight you dont need especially off the front good luck

LCA's are Lower Control Arms. They connect your rear axle to the rest of the car. They take the tire power and make it move the car forward. The stock ones are weak and flimsy, and cause wheel hop.
A chip? That's a question for the TBI board for sure.
The power adder forum is for POWER ADDERS, ie. super chargers, turbo chargers, and nitrous. It should be called the forced induction forum, but I digress.

i agree, i would think that the subtitle "Getting a Supercharger or Turbocharger? Thinking about using Nitrous? All forced induction and N2O topics discussed here. " would give it away, but this is the 3rd topic about gettin power out of a 305 in the past 3-4 days which is really kind of annoying

i mean, im getting rid of my 305 problem, a good junkyard 350 would benifit these guys alot. I bought one for 150 bucks, 60 over, overheated and hauled aXX
