Turbo Header

Hello folks. I'm looking to install a (single) turbo system on my TPI motor. Can someone point me in the right direction on where I can purchase quality turbo headers? I am looking to keep my A/C and serpentine belt.

Re: Turbo Header

your probably better off fabbing up your own headers..........i bought a setup that was for a single turbo and i had to modify the crossover pipe and passenger side header in order to make it work....if you have a/c it would have been worse.......check ebay ot the turbo forums. sometimes you might get lucky to find something already done

Re: Turbo Header

Yep you are not going to find anything close to bolt on unless it's something used like Badass355 said. The good news is it is pretty easy to plumb up a single turbo setup. Since yours is serpentine, the AC is on the passenger side and that makes life a lot more difficult. The easiest location is probably going to be where the passenger side battery tray is (I think on the firebird the battery is already on the driver side?). The idea being you can get a 3 inch downpipe down between the frame and passenger side manifold, which will connect into your stock exhaust routing.

I've done what you are wanting to do, but mine is 87 so the AC is on the correct side -> the driver side. It's not an easy task to keep everything but well worth the effort to have boost + cold AC.

Re: Turbo Header

To allow more room you can put the battery in the trunk, Instead of buying a kit you should be able to pick up a set of battery cables from the junkyard for rather cheap. cobalts, and newer impalas have batteries in the trunk. As far as the header goes. You can get lucky on ebay, But there's a chance you will have to modify a slight bit. All depends on the resources at hand on which way you go

Re: Turbo Header

Lots of newer cars have it in the trunk, like a 5th gen camaro also...

trunk mounting is a PITA on a track car with the switch and box requirements (not all of which make sense either), I've gotten away with mounting a lawn mower, motorcycle or even UPS style gel cell under the stock battery tray or in the tray if it's small enough leaving room for the ducting...

Where the heck have you been Ed? I'm going to need an entire setup from you soon (w/out AC), as I don't trust the crap that is out there for that much boost I plan on running. Shoot me a PM when you get the chance, as I'll need the single turbo header, the drivers side header, crossover, and down pipe....

Re: Turbo Header

Hi again guys/gals, yeah, I've been disapeared from the scene for quite a few years now, I think 2007 was the last batch of headers we made.

I am OK, working currently with the pharmaceutical industry, but still involved on cars, but I have to say not like before . I still own my GTA which has been modded quite a bit and I race it on autocross. We are tinkering with the idea of doing all the headers that we used to offer before and complete kits.

Metahead212121, what happened? Any problem with the headers?

Here is pic of the GTA

Re: Turbo Header

Ed, I'm running a Precision T-88 with T4 flange and .96 a/r for a worked over 305, lemme know how much modification will be needed to the valve cover and strut tower for the necessary clearance. Whenever your ready just lemme know....

Serpentine or V belt? A/C is still in or not? All headers where designed around short valve covers, the belly of a .96 turbine housing will may just touch the valve cover, nothing that a thicker gasket or a small dent on the valve cover will resolve. The T88 housing is a big compressor housing it wont on a serpetine header kit, and most probbably fit on the V belt header with a shorter alternator belt and deleting the factory stock alt harness and doing this(see pic). That's a T76 on a V belt turbo header, notice the shorter belt on the alt and the delete of the metal bracket and replaced with a simple setup made by rod ends and threaded shaft.
Let me know if you need more information
Ed

Ed- like all the other parts on my car I "financed" the money for your headers. I don't even remember how I ended up buying my turbo headers from you. I think you said you were doing one last run and I just figured it was now or never. Maybe in a couple years when things get better (money wise) I'll put them in. Hopefully down the road you'll be around in case I need help. If you ever post on thirdgen.org that you'll be doing one last run of turbo kits expect a order from me.... (hint hint)
