dont know much about turbos wondering if turbo from like a volvo 18 wheeler (lol yes pretty heavy)would work on a fire bird

Could you physically find a way to bolt it up? Yes. If you can make it fit somewhere in the car and can pipe exhaust gasses to it, and fit the charge piping you can make it all go.

However, Turbochargers must be sized to the application and intended usage. There are compressor maps available for this.

Too big of a turbo will spool slowly, go bigger than "too big" and you may not be able to build boost at all.

Too small and it'll spool fast, but it will also run hot which increases wear and tear as well as introducing extra heat into the intake charge, reducing power.

Sizing a turbo is just like building an engine. An engine is a symphony and each part has a piece to play, mis-match them and you end up with a sour note.

 

In short the answer is yes, in long you need to know what the turbo is and what engine you're running it on. For instance your 3.1L would be pretty hard up to spool a TV8101 but if you had a 400 or 383 with some aftermarket heads it would be a great unit to use.

 

It depends on the engine. I have an HX52 off of one that I intend to use on my project, it's got a fairly large compressor and a tiny turbine side, a pretty good combination for a smaller engine (mine is going on a 305), but be aware that it kind of locks you in, the flange is used on nothing else, it's bigger then a standard T4 and smaller than a T6.

 

well the next step is to learn about the turbo it has a bunch of numbers on the bottom between the two parts (kno nothing about turbos ) so any way i can find out about it like a website??

Looks like a GT4594, used on some of the bigger volvos. Should have a 1.33 exhaust A/R. It's a pretty large turbo, what are you hoping to run it on? If it's the 305 you list then it's probably way to big.

 

wat about a 350 if not no big deal j/w

 

Still a big turbo, but for a healthy 350 it would be OK
