thinking of a turbo setup

Im thinking about taking it to the next level and just wondering where the best place to get the majority of a kit from or should I piece everything together seperately. Any idea on an average price for a full setup. Single or Twin?

Re: thinking of a turbo setup

First you need to set aside about $25k for a turbo build, depending on power level ,$25k is a good start . There is alot that goes into turbo builds. I have not seen any turbo kits that are good.Your best bet is to go to your local race car/chassis shop to get an estimate on the turbo plumbing or if you have time and patience fab all the turbo plumbing yourself. Talk to engine builders/machine shops also race trans builder (not regular amco type trans shop). twin or single turbo setups will do the job.

Re: thinking of a turbo setup

From start to finish from stock car to fully build turbo car, depending on power goals, 25K isnt that bad Thats about where I'm at doing all the work myself. If you have someone do a build, its typically abit more. I've seen some shops quote 3500-5000 for basic single turbo hotside/coldside setups and install but that doesnt include alot of extra parts you need, nore does it include a finish tune.

Now if you only wanted a mild boost over stock, say 10psi on a basic 350 or 305, then few thousand bucks is all you need to do everything you want.

nobody makes a kit for these cars as far as I know. BBSDesigns was going to start making some hotsides and possibly kits but havent seen where that went.

Re: thinking of a turbo setup

Its all depends on what you build. My aftermarket block based shortblock was 4600 alone. Complete motor now with the current heads I have, price is up over 10-11K just for the motor. Still need suspension/trans/turbo kit, electronics/ignition/management, all kinds of extra parts. Maybe even a rear end. Roll cage. etc.

This type of build gets to be money, however the power is just about endless...1200 hp or so on this block. For a 500-600 hp setup, you can get away with MUCH less. Stock GM block, cast crank/forged pistons. Dont need al the top parts for something like that.

Even then it is too much. These 25K builds are designed to run constant eight and nine second passes, and aren't designed to be run everyday on the street. I can buy a pair of TTA's for 25K, with both running in the tens, and driven everyday. Cast engines will survive boost so long as detonation and timing are kept in check. If we're talking all out race car, with the best of everything because you need it to be (and stay) competitive in its' class, then yes, I can see 25K, and possibly even more...

Re: thinking of a turbo setup

I really do wish it only cost 25k to run 8,9 seconds in the 1/4. They are so many components to turbo build. Think about it... your thirdgen chassis could only go far before it starts twisting away.. that 10 bolt rearend will gernade ... forget about using the t5 or 700r4... stock fuel pump would run out of fuel flow... howabout a cage?? to run 8 or 9 seconds.

Re: thinking of a turbo setup

These are street cars though, Dave. Most of the turbo builders here aren't looking to compete with the big boys, they are simply looking to run in the elevens on the street, and maybe an occasional ten at the track, and that is still very fast if you ask me. I can run elevens all day long with a bone stock Turbo Buick running a 60-1 turbo and turbo tweak chip and it will live forever, with an occasional ten second pass at the track. Cage? Sure, if you have one professionally installed that can run you literally thousands, but with the DIY kits out there it is merely the cost of the kit and a tig/mig welder. I would be the first to admit that if you have the work done for you, it will cost you a lot of money, way more than 25K when all is said and done. But if you can do it yourself, it'll easily cost under 10k (car included), and for that you can build a pretty respectable ride for the street. I've seen your build on Turbo Buick, and believe me, most of the guys here are not that deep into it as you are, but I can definitely see now where your coming from though...
