Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Did you try to fit the s475 in the passenger side area in front where the charcoal canister sits? Seems like it would fit, but I am not sure of the dimensions of that turbo. I know it would need some sort of support because of the weight.

May want a bigger fuel pump for 800 whp thru a th400. May be close but only need mid high 600's for good 9 sec passes

Looks like a fun build, should scoot

That turbo is a giant and doesnt look that big until you try to start fitting it. I tried all kinds of different positions and this or more to the drivers side would be best. And yes it is heavy and requires a good brace

thanks. You are rite about the pump, im going to run it for a while on a mild tune up and then upgrade to a magna fuel. The a1000 hasnt been a very good pump ive had a few problems with it.

Awesome! Definitely a huge bitch. Been debating a t6 S400 on my new build but you just turned me off lol. I put a T6 in my last 87 and it was a PITA!

Looks awesome!

T6 is nice budget price but theres no reason a good t4 cant make big numbers

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Thanks guys. The t6 s400 is huge but a t4 wouldnt support what I want to do eventually power wise. I had twin 58s on it before and it was a bitch to work on so thats why I went with the big single. Im going to have this turbo upgraded to a 88 or 91 by forced inductions down the road when I build a dart block. I can change all the spark plugs from the top and still get both valve covers off with the headers on which was a no go with the twins. You could tuck the turbo closer to the motor and probabley leave the top core support and just move the radiator back some if your using a stock size.

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Mightymouse made something like 1200-1300 out of a single t4 91 mm i thought? If you have smaller cubes you can definately get some big numbers out of a T4.

Alot of the 5.3-6.0 s480 stuff seems to get to 1000hp+ so the 88 stuff likely can do abit more. Think those builds were T6 tho

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Yep smaller cubes and a t4 can make some huge power but if anything my cubes are going up with a aftermarket block. The s488 are rated at 1500hp so I would think 12-1300 whp would be doable. A bad litlle t4 turbo is the s476r I am really impressed with those.

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Did you ever try to run the downpipe from 5 inch to 4 inch and run it back behind the passenger side header? Is there room there?

What are you doing about a radiator and intercooler? Running a smaller radiator with pusher fan from the front?

Looks good! I have a similar location planned for my S480. It's a little more cramped with an LS engine. What fuel are you going to run?

You could run the downpipe back and out with 4" and maybe some frame notching. The radiator is moved up and tilted forward with 2 12" pushers and is a 28 or 30x19 cant remember. I didnt want to deal with the downpipe being in the way and fender exits are cool I think.

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Thank you. I picked up an S400 and a 5.3. So far I've only found in front of the engine like you have or else it just fits if mounted in place of the battery on the passengers side right up against the wheel well. The downpipe would point directly at #2 cylinder and reducing to 4" with removing AC allows the downpipe to fit.
I'm glad a few more S400 builds have shown up because the physical size of these turbos makes finding a home for it most of the battle. I was planning on putting the battery in the rear but now that I think about it moving it to the drivers side where the charcoal cannister was on my 88 would keep wires short and put the bettery about 6" from the PCM. Looks good so far. I'll be subscribing since I have yet to pick out a wastegate, BOV and intercooler.

I love that this is carb'd, cool build. How hard is it to run the blow through setup?

Yes these turbos are huge but best bang for the buck. I think in front of the motor mounted sideways is the best way to mount em. Good routes for the dp and oil drain and air filter. You dont realize how big they are until you get a filter and downpipe attached.

Blow throughs are not bad if set up properly. The carb is a 750hp holley modded by csu carbs. First one I had only required a jet change to lean it out a little and a little messing with the idle feed restrictors. Never could get the cruise leaned out as much as I wanted always hovered in the 12 a/f range but im not after fuel economy.

Yes they are. I about put my back out every time I move it(don't put them 6' up on a shelf).
I'll have to pick up a filter and see how much more room it takes up. That and trying to find a 5"-4" reducer.

Silicone intakes . Com lol. They have 5-4" reducer couplers. Put a small 4" pipe piece between to connect

I did 5" for my intake I had left over from my downpipe. Not in the best location but it will work. And my truck got stolen last saturday night and got it back monday wrecked with balled tires. They hot rodded pretty good and obviously couldnt handle the power and smashed it up into something.

Sorry, I was talking about reducing the downpipe. I figure it's easier to find a 5" filter easier than fit a 5" downpipe on an unmodified F-body. Thanks for the heads up though.

Summit sells some reducers adapters 5-4". I've seen them. Columbia doesnt deal with 5" much just straights from what i remember

Little update I got the down pipe out the fender. I need to go get a 5 1/4in hole saw and get the ground affect cut. The motor is coming out this week to get the je pistons and hbeam rods put in. I also got my 9.5in ptc converter on the way should be here in two weeks or so. Hoping to have it running by the end of the month if all goes good.

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

I'm waiting to see how the fender dump sounds. I would like to go that route but I'm waiting for more 5.3/S400 builds so I know how loud it will be either way. Otherwise I've planned on a small race muffler and something NASCAR style side exhaust.

Lookin good! You're a little further along than I am. (my build is in the lsx swap section)
Definitely plan on dumping my DP out the fender like that too.. kinda dreading cutting a massive hole in the fender though!

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Nope. all the parts are here. I fractured my tibia 2weeks ago and have a couple rods going thru my heel and my upper tibia. Wont have surgery to repair it for a couple weeks so I doubt it will get put together before winter.

Your car turned out sweet though! How hard does it pull on a pumpgas tune? Looks like it rips!

Aww man! That sucks!! Mine has been running ok(10.01 @143mph). No traction, break this, break that. Trans is out of it currently. Time for a Transbrake! Get well soon! Lots of work to do!

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Big update for anybody still payin attention. Im on the mend from my last surgery on my tibia. I have 12 screws and a plate in my right leg and i have been able to slowly work on the car been rollin around my shop in a wheelchair!lol. Anyways with a little help from a few good buddies and my dad i got the motor in and running. Runs really good after sorting out a few problems i was having. The 5" fender dump sounds mean and is not that loud and the cam sounds awesome! Going to License it in the morning and go cruise it around and get some miles on the motor and make some boost! Im so excited to get it back on the road and it has been the only thing keeping me from going crazy not workin. Anyway heres a few pics and a video of it idling.

Re: 86 Ta 383 s475 build

Looks great! Very similar setup to my old 370 LS with a T6 Garrett. I also had the fender dump (just turned down under the fender) and surprisingly its not too too loud. the turbo does act as a good muffler. I cant wait to see how quiet my new setup is with a full exhaust!
