8 year old Vortech, Install?? ouch!
Hey guys,
A local has an old vortech, he said about 8 years old for a TPI car.
He said he has everything, and I was gonna offer him some cash Tomorrow for it, pending some research.
Everything I found online is "ati vs vortech" and blah. But that doesn't help much.
The vortech, whats it do bolt right in, then you have to plug some fuel management unit in that retards timing? Hope it likes my msd.
Ive seen posts about drilling holes in the oil pan. Whats up with that??
What exactly does the intercooler cool? the air? is running high octain (like 94 with a booster) equivilent? I'm only running
9:1 compression so I think I can run my timing a bit on the high side. Right?
If anyone has any advice, especially something like "Dude those old vortech units sucked" or "they differ from the new ones because of...." that would be really cool.
He told me he paid like $2400.00 for it like 8 years ago.. Never even bolted it on.. (think its still good?) I'm not sure what I should offer him, if anything..
As always, thanks!

Vortech has a lot of info on their web-site. I bought a used Vortech supercharger that I installed on my Cross-Fire Corvette.

They have a lot of info on ther Tech/Service page
This is the installation manual for 1988-1992 5.0/5.7 TPI F-Body

You can get a brand new V2-SQ S-trim for that price. That 8 year old one is probobly an A-trim, which is worthless. You can tell by looking at it's impeller. The A-trim has strait blades, where the S-trim has curved.

Hey Man,
I was gonna offer him like a grand for it.. Would that be worth it?
I'm trying to figure out what the details on it are to rule out installation time, etc..

If you can get the whole kit for a grand, go for it. I wouldn't spend any more for it. If it ia 8 years old it is definately an a-trim, and i wouldn't call them worthless
I have seen cars go mid 11's with the a-trim head unit. Good luck, and let us know if you got it.

I bought mine used at a swap-meet for $500. It was a kit for a Ford Bronco, so I could only use the supercharger itself. Mine is also an A-Trim and I got a 65% hp increase from it.
Vortech can upgrade the A-trim it to S-trim also. Think that they want somehting like $700 for the upgrade. They replace all bearings, the compressor wheel and the compressor housing. If it is a new unit the upgrade might cost less.

You also asked about the FMU (fuel management unit) This unit does not retard your timing, it is a additional fuel pressure regulator, that is boost sensitive. it provides you with a higher fuel pressure when boost conditions occur, so you inject more fuel when needed.
Most Vortech kits that i have seen, came with a ignition retard box, which to me looks almost identical to a MSD 6-BTM, just painted a different color and a Vortech badge pasted on it.

Hey,
Just to let you all know, I bought the Vortech A-trim. It was new, still all sealed in plastic an un-opened. I paid $1500.00.. Vortech told me they give a 1,000.00 credit for A-trims, twords a S-trim, which is like 1700.00. So if I need more boost eventually, I know what to do.
