is it a good idea to just ditch the AC ?

since im putting in a new motor (355) and D1SC, should i ditch the ac alltogether ? what else should i take out, will it increase HP ? How much weight will i save ? The reason i ask is i never use the AC even what it's boiling hot outside, it robs tons of power from the stock engine, what do ya think guys ?

Thanks 91Z

I took the AC off of mine. You can get a pulley from GM that was supplied with the 1LE cars. Its a bracket that bolts in place of the AC.

Im not sure on the part number of it.

It would free up a lot of weight on the front end.

DEFINATELY SCRAP IT..... I got rid of mine...It was the best thing I ever did...Think about engine HEAT...With a procharger Your Air has to PAss you Intercooler....Then the AC condenser then MAybe hit the radiator.... That = Bad News.... Much better to have just the intercooler and the radiator...

But Id do the whole swap....I Took Everything Off of the car...I just bought a NON ac box and blower motor...That makes a TON More room in the engoine compartment... Plus changing the #8 spark plug does not requuire being under the car or an anorexic friend to help you do...

Then Just get the delete pully like Guido said....

It's your choice on what you feel you need to do, i personally have had no problems with cooling, sitting in traffic on a nice 80+ degree day, with the A/C running, i kept my A/C, because i don't have t-tops, and it can get alittle warm (with alot of humidity) here in michigan,
Willie has also done some pretty extensive testing in 100+ Arizona weather and has never complained about overheating, with his D1sc kit.

If i was building a car to run alot at the track, then yes i would probably ditch the A/C.

but as i said earlier, the choice is yours.

Me being one of those people who like to cruse down the interstate without going deaf would say keep it. The problem with these cars is the huge amount of glass they carry, which in turn translates them into greenhouses in the summertime. You will also kill the resale value of the car. At the very least take it off nicely and tuck it in the garage so it can be reinstalled if you decide you need it in the future.

Me too...

Yes what exactly do i need if i remove the a/c? Since the a/c happens to be sitting where my turbos going to go, it's gotta go, didn't work anyhow.

T-tops only make it hotter!

Since I'm a Deverite also, you can live with out A/C here in the metro area.

There are 30 days through out summer where it is really nice to have.

Guido, do you mean that you can resell a car after buying it??? (shhh, don't tell my wife, she might figure out how to fix the problem of the insurance company not allowing all the cars on one policy ;-)

I've axed the AC on my '83 and '87. Both were dischaged enough that they didn't really work and I didn't feel that the cost of recharging them was worth it.

You wouldn't believe how much more room there is to work on things with out it.

I heard those dash tops crack but that is rediculous. I like my A/C. after not owning cars for many years that had A/C or had disfunctional A/C, I love it. I will pull it when I become impatient or angry enough at it but for now I like the sound of "I beat you with the A/C on." and to make a 10 (9 hopefully) second pass with an A/C equipped car, it tells any jack a$$ that doubts if it is a real street car to "get lost".

To remove the a/c first you will neadan a/c delete pulley, p/n 10055890 from gm ($49), and shorter belt. Then the fun part finding a non a/c heater box to replace the original. Because the part has been discontinued and the fact that 99% of V-8 f-bodys came with a/c. Thats it. No real power gain (less than 5hp) but 20-30lbs weight savings.

no way, unless your competing for money just leave it in.......if it works.

if you never use it, there's a good chance that it might be bad; unless you run the air in the winter when it's stored to lube up the seals as well as in the summer to keep it from evaporating.

but, if it works i'd keep it, these hardtop cars are hell in high heat during a cruise an it's nice to have.......plus, if you ever have a female in the car she might be appreciative of the air.

anyone who says a hartop is cooler than a t-top is insane......

Hardtop is definately cooler...Think about it next time you show up somewhere in a rainstorm and have a nice wet spot in you pants from the bad sealing issues... Plus Im sure my car would look really GAY with a roll cage and some t-Tops...LOL

i meant cooler as in colder temperatures or "cool" not as in a cool car or not.

if your telling me your sitting in 80 degree weather in your t-top car and i'm in my hardtop, your going to be hotter than me? you obvioulsy haven't ridden in many cars.......

ever try removing the t-tops?

at most they are equal, most t-tops have tint to keep the sun off you, put the covers over them and it would be the same as a hardtop.........remove the t-tops so air can move an their is no way.

either way a hardtop is alot hotter making for a more miserable time without air..........
