how are moderators/administrators chosen??

i have noticed that moderators are the people that 'moderate' the board and seem to be the most knowleagable about that specific topic. but i dont understand HOW one becomes a moderator. are they chosen by fellow members, or do the administrators select them? how does it work. also, how many administrators are there? and arent they the people that own and operate the site?

Judging by what I hear from moderators of ACTIVE boards, it's not a goal to shoot for. Aparently, it's a lot of locking threads, getting called a hypocrite, moving threads, seeing the same posts every day, and not being able to run things the way you want to.

A lot of moderators step down, or just sort of dissapear. I can think of 3 mods on the TBI board (since I started posting) that have stopped posting, or gave up moderating because of the way things were being run.
Taking a look at the list of people that mod a board (just to the right of the board link, on the main board page) probably about a quarter of the total names don't post/moderate anymore.

i never ask and was never asked, when the boards came back up a few years ago i had the general engine board and later ask for the other 2 i now moderate. it's true a lot of people never look at or post on the boards they moderate. it's also true that you get a lot of nasty grams along with a few praising what you do. it takes a lot of time and effort to really watch a board and keep it in line. like was already said you enforce rules that you don't make and maybe don't agree with.

Yeah it's not an easy job since you take so much crap for doing the right thing and keeping this place clean and running smoothly.

Thats why I didn't like it too much. You do a good job though iroc22, I'm glad I was able to get you on that board. You kept your word about keeping things clean. And you do most of the work.

Yeah, it sure is tough on the Nationals board, lol, actually I've had a few trouble makers.

Even Vader had fun with it

Cheers to the Administrators and the Moderators!!! Cheers to a job well done! Who cares what the trouble makers say. THat is why they are called trouble makers instead of peace makers. Again Cheers to you all. We know you all do your best to make this a great web site. And I will do whatever I can to help you all keep it that way!

Thanks
Keiran

what I find funny is I have seen people on other boards talk smack about thirdgen.org. among other things is the **** mods that will lock a thread if it is off topic or get out of hand, or how there is no general "chat" board. well once you get over the need to post in a general lounge then, the boards get better.

really who cares if the guy on the other side of the screen just broke up with his girl friend and he needs advice. don't you have any "real world" friends to talk too about it? or what color your prom dates dress should be.... or the BS posts with FWD type stuff in it? I get enough e-mails from people I don't need it on the boards.
ok I'll get off my soap box
