If you enable "Use 'Email Notification' by default?" in your userCP, each time you reply, you will receive notification of any replies. This option will also automatically make you subscribed to the thread and place a link inside your userCP.

In this vB2.x, you don't have that option. In vB3.x, that option was changed to do what you're wanting (subscribe to a thread with an option of either email or no email notification).
