Were 712 users really on line here?

I've been away a couple of days and at the bottom of the forums page it says "Most users ever on line was 712, Today (May 4) at 9:12 am."

Two days ago it was in the upper 400 range.

Did it really jump over 200 users this morning? or was it some kind of software glitch?

Just curious, because I remember the days when 150-200 was a lot of users to be online at one time.

I think a couple of those could have been google spiders. But yes, we are easily hitting 300 people on at one time since the new format is optomized for google and other search engines.

I've been on this board since Christmas 1998 and am very pleased when the site does well. AND I have donated money to help so I really do care to keep the site going well. After all, I spend about 2 hours a day here (I know, I know---I need to get a life! lol)

However, look at my time I posted the this thread opener.

8:24 p.m. (Central time) May 4.

I came here this evening (May 5) @ 7:30 pm (Central time) and the bottom of the main forum page now says: "Most users ever online was 794, Yesterday at 7:54 p.m. (Central).

I had refreshed right before the post last evening to verify the numbers before posting and the numbers were in the 280 range.

I know the users number really don't mean much, however, those users numbers are really jumping around and I don't think there were that many users at that time.

Like I said earlier, and I know this may be my paranoia resurfacing, but are those numbers right or is there possibly a software glitch?

Either way, like I said, no big deal.

Just one of those---HMMMMM moments.

Thanks,
jms

Probably not a glitch.

Any non-signed in member or potential member now has to be logged in to view attached images... which is a good way to increase member counts or people online at a particular time.

If you're not a member, you need to sign-up to view a relevent image in a post. Which, requires you being logged in or, online.

If your are a member... doesn't matter, you still have to be logged in (or online) to re-view a post with attached images that may have had another image attached and you want to see.

Forced viewing makes for adding members that find thirdgen posts via a search engine and increases board online activity because you almost have to be online if you want to see 92% of any posts with images.

Of course.. that's just my opinion... who cares what it means..

The "most online" counter is accurate. One thing to keep in mind is that it includes guests as well as registered members. The numbers have been higher lately because Googlebot and Jeeves have been agressively indexing the site.

I don't think there was ever that many Members and guests here, I've never seen anything like that. Something is wacky there.

Well come on now. Bots n spiders don't count. Only real live people is an accurate count.I know its good fo the stats to draw people in but.......

Recentaly I had to change subaru help board because of that. Fisrt one I found would have 900 folks online all the time and I was a member for 6-8 months. Never got any decent help. Some deep searching found another with 20 folks online and I got so much help in the first 3 days I became a donating member.

Why? the 2nd site had real live people online. Not the same but similar.

Keep it real.

OT but the welcome message displays funny today?
