History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Just always been curious about the wheels on my brothers old 84 Z28. (Sold it a long time ago). Its hard to tell from the picture, but the wheel inserts are painted red. I guess we never really thought about it but just assumed thats how they came. Knowing what I do now I would assume that somebody painted them because I never seen another set like them. Thanks for helping me stop wondering about this!
I may be wrong, but I think you could get a red 89 or 90 RS with the red wheels like that. They might have came off of one of those cars if someone else didn't paint the originals. I don't know how long ago he had the car...
And they could be had in red also. The last car I looked at before buying my T/A was a Red Camaro that originally came with red wheels. The owner had them chromed, as the red paint fades to pink.

There was a special 1987 Camaro RS with the RPO (Z5C) that was suppose to only be available in California, but for some reason they were also available in Texas and Florida. I've seen new purchases that were made in these 3 states, and there could be other areas but they haven't popped up yet. They were probably released in other areas to test the market out of California.
They were only available with a V6 in 3 colors red, white or black with the matching 15" wheels. They had the mono color ground effects and spoiler as the Z28 along with the same leather wrapped steering wheel. I've never been able to find out how many were made in 1987.
The same model was produced for 1988 with the same RPO (Z5C) and 7,038 were produced this year. This special RS model was discontinued after those 2 years.

Re: Painted Camaro Wheels?
It was probably 87, I thought they had some in 88 too, but I am not a Camaro guy, more Firebird. I just remembered a limited number of places that got RS early...
Firebirds had something similar, I forget the name tho...
