Need A Tranny.

I haven't posted in a while but as my '82 sits, it needs a transmission. I had a Turbo 350 in it as my profile reads but it recently chewed it up and spit it out in a bind and couple months ago. Now the '82 sits in a backyard. Which is ironic because that's how I found it two years ago. My means of transportation now is a 2002 Trans Am I bought in January. Ya'll probably remember me having a 1999 as well but that one was totaled back on Christmas Eve.

I was out at Sam's Club last night up off Highway 6 and saw Craig and couple other third and fourth gens. I'm out at that meet almost every weekend. But last night I was looking for a deal on a tranny.

Anyway. My point is.. I need a transmission. Whether it's a Turbo 350 or a 700R.. I need one. So if anyone knows of any good deals on one or knows someone who can rebuild one for a pretty reasonable price (Not no $1300 bucks.. That's another story..), PLEASE let me know. I'd like to make it out to the Spring Fling. If I can't with the third gen, my other question is.. Would ya'll mind a fourth gen around your crowd? Trust me, it looks and sounds good.

I'll be browsing the forums for a transmission. This is about the fourth time I've gone through this crap with this car. But I would never get rid of it.

This is all just a bunch of .

Wow--wish I had known U were out there--should have grabbed me by the arm and introduced yourself.

There was a really nice looking 3rd gen TA--silver --out there--U don't know who that was do U?

Yes--U are more than welcome in the 4th gen.

Are U still in the auto parts biz? I would think somebody could hook u up with one if U are.

If U want to get that one rebuilt talk to:

Owen
ARD--Advanced Racing Dynamics
5023 Addicks Satsuma rd, Suite b,
Houston, Texas, 77084
832-593-9140

From I-10 and highway 6, go north past keith harrow till you reach addicks satsuma. take a right turn and go about 1/2 mile down and you will see the sign and it is located on the left in a business park.

Owen builds one killer tranny (of all types) and is WAY cheaper than anybody I have ever heard of. Don't know what he would want for a 350 (what's in there now?), but I know a few months ago when I was by the shop, he was doing a 700 for somebody for 900.00--normally a 700 is about twice that much.

Other than that as I'm sure U know U can always go to a boneyard and get one (but U never know what U are gonna get til it's in). Seems like somebody had one locally here on the board recently, but do not remember who of when. Look back through the older post/threads and see if U can find it--also, look thru the "Private installers index" that is stickied at the top-- mybe there is somebody in there that can give U a lead on one. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for all of your help guys. I really do appreciate your opinions and what not.

And Barry.. Man oh man. I KNEW you looked familiar. I've probably sold you many parts before hand not knowing who you were and what you belonged to.

Craig, yes I am still in the parts business. Night Manager now, to be exact, of the O'Reilly store off Mason Road out in Katy. The tranny I had in the car just recently was a TH350. I bought that thing through my job with a one year warranty, converter and all, for $350 bucks and slapped a $40 B&M shift kit in it before I installed it. Thing barked second and third. Three months later, POOF! The 'Maro chewed it up and spit it out. Something about the front pump not engaging with the converter. People have told me that I may not have a good enough converter in it but then again I know that small block ain't pushing that much. For sure. So, I'm puzzled.

Hopefully I'll make it out to the Spring Fling. I'm requesting off from work and everything. If one of my other co-workers can get off for Fun Ford Weekend I'm sure I can get off for this.

Another question.. I guess I should just look around the board but I guess I'm just lazy.. What do ya'll think about a T-5 conversion? A standard in the old 'Maro? Just a thought..

Thanks for all your help though, guys! I'll look into everything ya'll have suggested. Looking to getting the 'Maro back on the road and soon! I miss her!

Stay away from the T-5. It's nothing but trouble--I'm sure some of the people here on this board that have had trouble with their T-5's will chime in here (ask Barry) or go to the tranny board and read all the posts of problems people have with them. Now if U want to convert to another type of manual that's another story.

Me personally I would stay with an automatic--I think U just got a bad one or something. Normally a 350 will pretty much last forever--even when U start throwing big ponies at it--they still hang. There must have been a defect in the rebuilding of the one U got--either go get another one or have that one rebuilt--but that's my opinion!

Just what exactly did/ does your 350 do anyway (or not do) There a number of things that can go wrong with a 350 that is a "quick fix". Describe as best possible. Although I m not a rebuilder, I used to manage a tranny shop, so i know some things about them.

I have a 200-4R that has been sitting in my garage for over 5 years I have done absolutely nothing with it. It came out of a 1987 Monte Carlo SS, I was told it had been rebuilt but I am not claiming that it has. I'll even throw in the stock convertor. $100 obo. If you're interested email me. monteboy87@yahoo.com

Seriously....do yourself a favor, and don't EVEN consider putting a T-5 in it. Stick with a WELL-BUILT 350. A stock rebuild on a 350 is good for a STOCK motor. A well-built 350 will handle much more power than a T-5. A well-built 350 would last you a long time. That's what I'm putting in.

T-5 = headache Just let me know about the 350, or grab me when I'm in the store.

I figured you'd laugh at the idea of a T-5 conversion, Barry. I kinda did too..

I have come to an agreement with myself.. I got that TH350 for $350 a while back and I did some research at my job and found out I can get a TH400 for the same price. A little bit more heavier duty, if you know what I mean. I met a guy out at Sealy this past weekend who has a '79 Camaro and he threw in a TH400 and hasn't has a problem since. A couple people have told me that a TH400 might be a little much for that small motor but hey, I'm open for anything right about now.

My dad threw an idea at me the other night... He wants the motor out of my Camaro because apparently the big block in his '72 Chevy Pick-Up is the exact opposite of "gas efficient" right now. Especially with Super Unleaded being well over the $3-a-gallon range. I told him he can have my motor as long as I can have his. Lets just say, a big block in that ol' Camaro will do quite some damage on the track.

So that's my decision. Well, our decision. The 350 goes in his truck and the 454 becomes apart of one of my long time dreams.. my track car.

By the way, the Fourth Gen ran an 8.77 out at Sealy this past Friday. Not bad for a stock motor and a little aftermarket exhaust, if you ask me.

So.. 454 in the 'Maro? Yay or nay?
