Bought a red rocket today
My name is Jimmy. I go by mailman because I own a right hand drive Jeep that I like to wheel on the weekends. I use to own a 98 Z28 but sold it 3 years ago because of a financial bind and a new born. Well the time came around where I could logically get another one. Got it off of craigslist. Got an unbelievably great deal on it.

As everyone else has said, very clean car. I hope to see you at some local shows, cruises. Rodney.
Re: Bought a red rocket today
Other than new hood and hatch shocks, I am changing the fuel filter, fluids, and belts. Going back with mobil 1 synthetics. The paint job looks like a maacos job up close. I am hopefully will get it resprayed after next year tax return. And as far as the fog lights. Consider them gone. The only thing in the inside needed is a new dash top, headliner, and patch the bolster that is ripped on the driver seat.

if i were you i'd get a chrome grill and new fog lights... except i'd put the fogs under where they are mounted now.. get the slim style from the parts store...
Re: Bought a red rocket today
Man I have been at this thing since 8am. Changed the oil, fuel filter, oil sending unit, front brakes and new shoes in the rear, and inner and outer wheel bearings. Had a stripped lug in the rear that I changed. New lift shocks on the hood and hatch. New taillight bulbs. The B&M shifter in it is bad. I need to find a stock shifter to go in it. If anyone has one laying around let me know what you want for it.

whats wrong with the shifter? You can buy pretty much every part for it off the b&m website... I rebuilt mine and it wasnt hard either and the parts i needed were like 25 bucks...

I may have a stock auto shifter if I didn't throw it away. If I have it and you pay for shipping plus $5 in gas for me to run it out to the UPS store, then it's all yours.
Let me know..

Welcome to TGO man, that is the most i would EVER pay for a third gen that was not HEAVILY modded(or zero miles). Anyone that pays more should just get a 98-02 LS1 F body. That thing looks clean as hell in those photos.

No problem, I hope the one you get is in good shape!
Your car is worth at least that, I've seen cars in that kind of shape go for a little more than what you got it for.
And dont mind Zane, he's the "I'm not gonna pay alot for that muffler guy!"
No offense Zane...

Ive got thick skin so it takes a lot to get me pissy.
but man i sure can make someone else pissy real quick.
On a side note. Once I recoup from the savings drain of buying the car. I live 10 minutes from Thunder Racing and 15 minutes from Futral Motorsports. I promise you it will not be something to snub your nose at when funds start flowing.

Re: Bought a red rocket today
It has a drum brake rear, or did you mean tires? Is it a faux Z28 or has the rear been replaced (a Z would have had discs)?
What does it have for an engine & tranny?

Re: Bought a red rocket today
You could get Z28's and TA's with drum brake rears. The cars with factory discs are the ones that had the G92 option package (RPO).

Re: Bought a red rocket today
Really? That's a new one on me. What is the point of having the better/upper level performance car, like a Z, yet put the old school weaker drum brakes on it?

Re: Bought a red rocket today
Yep.
Just a bit of GM history...
There are many Z's and TA's running around with factory drum / non-posi rears. Those cars are usually 305/auto TPI cars that weren't fully optioned out in order to offer a more affordable Z / TA. Most 350 TPI cars were usually optioned with the G92 RPO in which the customer paid extra for the line item "G92 performance package" on the window sticker.

Re: Bought a red rocket today
Yeah it is a z28 model. car fax confirmed before I bought it. It does have the 305 tpi/auto setup for the moment. The I don't know why the owner didn't spend the extra money when they bought this because they did spend it on the power windows, mirrors, locks and driver seat.

Re: Bought a red rocket today
G92 is the perf. axle code, and only on 88 and later. My 87 doesn't have that specific code but it does have a 3.27 9 bolt w/ 4 wheel discs. I think there's something funky w/ 87s and the G92 code.
The code for discs all round is j65

Some poeple hate my opinions, but they are just that, opinions. I have never paid more than 1000$ for any of mine, but i look for deals and they are not usually clean, maybe straight but needed paint most of the time.
But, you going with LS1 power and get rid of the junk TPI or what is the plan?

That was meant as a JOKE, not as implying that you were wrong. Trust me...If I think you were wrong about something, I'll say so. Flat out. OK?
Re: Bought a red rocket today
What year T/A are we talking about? The drum rear brakes is understood as I have one myself (1988 305 TPI with WS6).
However, I wonder about the "non-posi" comment because in 1986, the LB9 on the Trans AM required J65 which then required G80:

and

In 1987, it was required on the LB9 or B2L engine:

In 1990, according to Compnine's VIN database, no LB9 Firebird came without the G80.
The only year I'm unsure about is 1985, when the 305 TPI was introduced. That may have been an exception, but by large, the LB9 appeared to come with the G80 - atleast on the Firebird side.

Re: Bought a red rocket today
Well, my factory rear in my 86 TA was in fact a 1 wheel peel drum rear. Sucked till i got a 3.23 drum rear now that it is a votrec 355.
Re: Bought a red rocket today
Can you post the SPID sheet?
Are you sure it had an open rear axle and was not simply the clutches burned out/worn out as it does happen to posi-traction? When they wear out, you will have one-leg rears.
The dealer order sheets above indicate it cannot exist, but being around as long as I have, there appears to always be exceptions.

Re: Bought a red rocket today
I dont have the sheet. The rear was open. After i installed the new rear i opened the cover, the main reason i replaced it was due to bad bearings on the passenger side.
Re: Bought a red rocket today
With the car as old as it is, and I'm guessing you didn't own it since new, perhaps the rear-end was replaced? The 1986 documents I posted above pretty much show a LB9 triggers a G80.
If there is other evidence to show otherwise, I certainly would like to see it. I do know there could be mistakes, or exceptions, and it would be nice to know if this is the explanation, or if the rear-end in your T/A was simply swapped at one time or another.

Re: Bought a red rocket today
Yes, i admit the possibility, but as i swapped it, it looks as if the hardware has never been removed, the brake lines were near frozen together when i removed them, not that it means that much, but as have been doing them ALLOT, this one seemed as if the read had been in for a LONG time, i have owned the car since 02, but there is always the chance, it is a all manual car except it had AC.
Was a carbed car originally, 120 MPH speedo, ect. So if it was possible, my car was one of the possibilities.
