New 3rd gen owner/new to the boards

Hello all, I've lurked on this board for awhile now but this last week finally bought my first 3rd gen, a 1986 Camaro IROC-Z. I don't have a (working) camera right now but it's red with a red cloth interior, t-tops, and a 3.42 rear end. In the last 3 days I've dropped the engine, trans, and driveshaft out and cut out the factory exhaust. I am currently building a 355 for it and have a TH350 w/ a 3500rpm stall and a Holley 650 carb ready to go on.

Glad to be a member of TGO and hope to have the car on the road in January with a repaint coming before next summer!

Re: New 3rd gen owner/new to the boards

I'm in SW Florida in Fort Myers. Since my first post I've got the TH350 cleaned and painted silver, ran through the motor and repainted it chevy orange and am gathering the accessories (still need power steering, battery, wiring, etc) to get this thing in the car in the next few weeks. Still gotta figure out exhaust but im leaning towards shorties (for clearance) and true duals. Hope to get some pics for you guys soon!

Cool sounds good. It'll probably be a few days before I can work on the car again but today or tomorrow I wanted to head down to that new U-Pick and see if I can find anything cool, and I need PS pump brackets and a new driver side rocker.

Well I have the drivers side alt/ps bracket from a serp setup if you need it.

I walked through that yard and was impressed with how it was laid out. I liked it. The yard I usually go to is a mud pit in the summer, and just has cars piled everywhere. Plus the owner thinks he has the market cornered and adjust his prices based on how he feels that day. The new place had a price sheet, which I appreciated.

Hope to meet up with you soon. I'm free tuesday and wednesday this week, thats it though

HAHA! That was funny(I guess) because no,I'm not familiar with Cape Coma.I never get to far outside of Ocala!lol

Anyway, just had a thought. Poncho, you have complete serpentine belt setup on the 86 or is the a/c comp. v-belt driven?
or,are you building an old school 350 w/all v-belts?

Re: New 3rd gen owner/new to the boards

Well my girlfriend is a manager for advance auto so im getting a reman'ed PS pump with a warranty for pocket change! I may be getting in touch with one of you soon for those brackets though. Anyways the starter fell apart on me last night, carb is junk, and im really wanting to replace the POS edelbrock performer thats on there. Im kind of on a budget right now so can anyone recommend me a good intake in the $200 range?

It's also got some old GMPP 75cc iron heads on there that I want to replace with some higher flowing aluminum ones (tax refund!). Another thing I realized, the guy I bought it from said the cam had a .550 lift on it but im looking at my springs thinking there is no way he has a cam that big in this motor without breaking these stock-looking springs. My roommate has a comp cam with a .540 lift and his springs are about twice as thick as mine... any advice or words of wisdom would be great, this is my first SBC build so I want to do it right!

So anyways I bought everything else I needed to fire up the motor tonight, and im going to borrow the headers off of my roomates small block s10 to see if this motor is worth putting in the car. Wish me luck!

Re: New 3rd gen owner/new to the boards

Guys, im still here and still working on the car! I have some pics but trying to figure out how to host them. The motor is done now. Made some changes, my girlfriend got me some flowtech shorties for christmas and I ended up going with a rebuilt Holley 670 for the carb and getting rid of my old one since the 670's in much better shape. I sold my crappy edelbrock performer intake and picked up a Weiand Team G for super cheap. My next dilemma is that I really want to do a 3" true dual system and weld my roommates flowmaster 40's into it but everyone is telling me that a 3" system is next to impossible and most shops wont do it on these cars.

Any advice?

Aftermath Performance

939-4649

www.aftermathperformance.com

Roy is the owner/operator. He'll run the exhaust for you. It'll prolly just be dumped at the rear axle though. You will also loose a lot of ground clearance, so be forewarned.

Most single 3" systems are more than adequate for most setups. If having a dual 3" pipes make you happy, than by all means go for it.

Ive known Roy for awhile now we hang out at his shop a few times a week. The car is actually there now! I was actually talking to him about it the other night and after alot of research and with the power I'll be making for now I'll probably just bite the bullet for now and get the flowtech Y and a catback until I'm really making enough power for true duals to benefit.

Yep thats mine. Bought it off of another guy that hangs out there all the time. He was going to put an LS in it but kept putting it off due to the conversion cost so I just took it off of his hands, guess he decided on a fox body. Your car is the blue firebird? When is it supposed to be done?

Re: New 3rd gen owner/new to the boards

Im still here! Work is still progressing slowly but surely on the car. Engine/trans and driveshaft are in. This morning I just put the fan and bracket, trans cooler, and carb in. If anybody, or Jason, has any suggestions on fuel it'd be appreciated. The car has an in-tank pump but I dont want to use it since they are POS'es and I have a holley red ready to go in. Trying to figure out how I would bypass the one in the tank as I have no experience with this type of thing.

So after fuel pump, I still need to drop the PS pump in (need brackets) a new belt, battery, air cleaner and I think I'm done...

After that its on to the body and paint!

actually, the ac delco pumps are great. They usually lost a rather long time, its the damn generic replacements that die every other month......

and I thought that was a carb'd iroc.... or was it TBI?

good meeting you finally! I'll be stopping by there tomorrow after work.

Ok, ran your vin today while I was at the shop and your car was originally a carb'd car, so no intank fuel pump to worry about.

Just hook up the mechanical pump and you'll be set
