3rd gen gathering in phx area....FOR REAL!!

Ok its time to get off our lazy asses and actually get a 3rd gen gathering together..me & sebastian(camarostud1988) were talking and theres always talk about a meet or something but nothing ever happens...we need to pick a spot and a time and schedule it for a few months from now like late march or april when the weathers decent...we need to get something going like the 3rd gen gathering that mark has planned for maryland or wherever he is..if we plan this far ahead it should be plenty of time for every1 to get the time off and schedule it...come on guys lets get this going..!!!!!

I'm all for this. I can't do it alone, so we'll need everyone!

I am starting to work on a poster/ad idea or 2 but need a Camaro nut to help me with it. Any volunteers?

There *may* be a request for pictures of your cars to put in the ad, so if you get an opportunity to take pictures, jump on it. I believe we'll be specifically looking for front and rear 3/4 view from about 5' high (roof height). Use this as a rear 3/4 example. (This picture was taken too low, but if you line up with the roof that would be great!)

Great! I love to see those words!

I guess the initial question would be how big of event would we like? Something informal, say a cruise/show and shine "gathering", or would a day at the drags and a cruise the next day be a better alternative?

There are so many different things we could do, so voice in! Everyone's opinion matters!

My personal suggestion:

Meet up on a Friday afternoon about 2ish for a meet and greet/tailgate deal and convoy over to a Friday night drag @ FIR or SIR. Both offer "reservable" lanes. We could work out some sort of Sonic invasion/dinner deal for afterwards. We could ask around for some sort of hotel rate in either city for the visitors. The next day we could do a group breakfast somewhere and then cruise some twisties for a day of fun and photo ops. There would be the obligatory group photo to do, and I would love to see it done professionally, but overall it wouldn't have to be expensive! If we were to work out a deal with a pro photographer, we could pay for individual photos as well? Just ideas!

What are yours?

Hey i like the idea of the 2 day event...I think it should be in phx, phx is in the central part of the state, people could come from north or south parts of the state....and for the 2nd day cruise i think going up to the sedona area would be pretty cool and offer some awesome photo ops

Well, I missed the gathering up by 27th and Loop 101 a couple months back. Now that I got the 350 in my 83 TA, Im ready to go again. What does everybody think of a going to the track on a Saturday morning, invade the Scottsdale Pavilions Saturday night, and maybe a cruise Sunday morning. We can all gather up somewhere and take some pics of all our cars. Just an idea. But anyway, IM FOR IT!!!!

chris, your idea is great.....i'm totally supportive of whatever we can get going.....as we keep talking about getting together i feel more like crap since i wouldn't have my TA ready to join all (just hope everyone won't hold it against me if i drive my nissan maxima to the events :-)......but i'll do what i can to help out...........

a cruise to sedona would be cool for the second day agenda

fast86z28,
unfortunately i doubt i'll have my TA ready......i just bought a new car, and so the TA is my hobby car now,,,,damn, it sure looks good though sitting in the garage (got pics)......still runs fine, but burns a lot of oil now,,,,don't have it registered/licensed anymore either...............can only offer my participation in person without the car.......unless you have someone/someplace with an L98 ('88) good condition, ready for R&R, i could be interested :-)

Chris,

I am the guy with the white 92 TA that you helped out with bringing your car by my buddy's house to test a couple of parts. I finally got the car together and most of the bugs worked out. I have some odds and ends to finish up but the car is running WAY better than the last time we meet in person.

Anyways, I would be interested in this gathering. Not sure if I can do a two day event but I would definitely like to meet up with some other nice 3rd gens.

I would like to get a look at esams setup. It sounds similar to mine but without the DFI.

Scott

I'm glad to hear it! I still have the 2 pictures I took that night.

OK so lets pick a date folks and start thinking about either a get-together/cruise/1 day thing or a 2 day deal.
My vote? I think the April 4/5/6 weekend, what days depends on what we want to do. Why? Well Firebird is running FND's that Friday night with the AHDRA Bikes running the next night, so track prep *should* be better and all the gear *should* be working. It should still be fairly decent night-time temps.

I want ALL opinions! Sound off!

I'm in Chris. It would be perfect for everyone to show up at the track.

Yo dudes, just show up with your car even if it's not in the shape you want it to be in, and quit with this "My car's not ready" crap. Our cars will NEVER be ready. Most of us will be adding, fixing, or improving and modding stuff every single month for the next several years.

The point of this is for everyone to get together in numbers, hang out, meet each other, and make everyone else go "Damn there's a lot of f---in' 80's style camaros and firebirds down here tonight!"

No *******s or egos are necessary. So let's just have fun.

Erik

I agree with you on the part about doing something to our cars on a regular basis, but also i would rather have a gathering with some really nice decent cars down there than some crappy rusted out 3rd gens you so often..we already gotta bad rep with people thinkin we got "white trash cars: etc. we need to show people that there are some nice 3rd gen f bodys in existence

There are any number of parks in the area, but, I was also thinking of the Fry's parking lot at Baseline and I-10 across from AZ Mills. IF Fry's didn't work out, (thinking out loud) why not AZ Mills? Now that I think about it, AZ mills might not be a bad place to meet. The women that wouldn't be interested in talking about cars could shop, theres a food court. Hmm that might be a better idea.

Either way, it's a quick hop skip and jump via convoy to Firebird. Being right on the freeway would help any out-of-towners.

< edit > P.S. I'm working on setting up a small website right now, just somewhere to put a printable flyer(s) on, add another item that could be added to signature blocks to help in the advertisement department and to primarily act as a central location to obtain more information. I've set up an additional email on my account that will correspond with the web site so that people could ask questions. AS soon as I can verify that address is available I'll publish it.

I agree with you, the majority of the time Speedworld is a better prepped and maintained dragstrip. The down sides AFAIC are getting there and the condition of the supporting facilities.

IMHO, Firebird, with a nationally televised event the next day, *should* be well prepped and have all equipment ready. With a (again IMHO) larger pit area, a usually open concession stand and it's easy access from a major freeway, it reduces the logistical headache factor. The less the planners have to do the more fun they can have.

I completely respect your situation in both the area of driving and your opinion of the track and I see a possible gathering spot at the Albertson's at Bell and Grand.

Keep in mind that, to my knowledge, Speedworld only has open drags on Wed. nights. The Friday drags are a more organized event than an open drag night, with competiton for trophies etc.

An advantange for holding this at Speedworld is that April 5th is the "Pontiac Heaven Drag and More 5" event. That could draw some more interest in our gathering.

This is not my decision, it's our decision. I'll drive to either place and have a blast with my fellow thirdgenners!

i still vote for firebird because speedworld is 2.5-3 hours away from me, i have heard the same things about speedworld being better but i dont see driving 3 hours to pick up maybe .1 in the 1/4 if im lucky...ill still go if thats where it is but i would prefer firebird

I don't see how speedworld is better:

1. I couldn't break into the 15's at Speedworld
2. The track is super shady, I gave the sherriff dude $10 and he let me race, they didn't even check ID
3. The track is crap, pot holes everywhere, 70's style trailers for a tech area
4. It's in the middle of East Bumfuc|<

At least when you're driving through firebird you don't have to worry about patches of grass growing through the cement everywhere. I don't really like Firebird, but I hate Speedworld.

Chris,

I won't be able to make it on April 5th (my car won't pass tech anyways). One of my best friends is having his wedding that evening. If this turns out to be an all weekend thing, I might be able to do something on Friday or maybe Sunday if I am not too hung-over.

Esams,

Got any times with your recent setup?

Fast86Z28,

It should take you about 1.5 hrs to get to Speedworld from AJ. That place isn't exactly close but 2.5 hours is stretch.

385- I'm still sporting the stock L98. My Stealth Ram, cam, and SLP headers are in my closet.

But my time in Salt Lake at 4200 feet elevation was 14.7 @ 94mph. I have no idea what it will run here but it better be faster! That's why I'm so anxious to go to Firebird in April.

Doing drag shocks/struts and subframes next week, then 3000 torque converter and sticky tires. Hoping for 13's by putting every bit of that 280 hp to the ground.

... as far as u not breaking into the 15's, sounds liek a person problem

...ive never seen pothole/grass at their track.

... as far as the dirt road.. yes, at 1 time u had to.. but the dirt road was only for 50-60 ft. not it has all been repaithed.

but hey.. i like pseedworld more.. that my opinion.. just cuase fireSLICK cant prep thier track to save their life.. and we the general public have to wait for a huge NHRA evenet to come into town to get them to actually TRY and prep their track, plus waiting 2 hrs for 1 pass.. yea.. i love waiting in line so a few 100 ricers can break into the 17s. .. i wonder what ever happened with that patition that was made a few month back...

what petition? was a ban ***** petitition? that would kick ***..or they should ban people that run 16.49 and slower, that would eliminate half the people out there and cut the times down a lot better...

AZ Mustangs wrote the following petition in reference to Firebird International Rwaceway.

http://www.petitiononline.com/fir9304/petition.html

The main complaint was a lack of safety on the track. There were no "slick only" lanes, no starting lane maintenance between cars, no ambulance on property during FND's and a lack of system maintenance on the track for a significant period of time. Combine that with the track only running FND's where anything that can gain forward momentum can run down the track and people that wanted a place to really test their skill and drag race were understandably upset.

There are quite a few of us that do not like Firebird. I know Firebird has reserved lanes for specific car clubs in the past, so, IF we can agree that Firebird is the track to do this at, maybe we can get that to happen. A dedicated lane *should* mean more runs.

I'm going to start another thread and get everyone to vote on the meeting place. We need to get going on this if it's going to happen.
