Soocrispy's engine update

Here's what I found:

All rod and main bearing were wiped out.

6 of 8 pistons with top ring broken, one of which also had the second ring broken.

Getting crank turned (hopefully not too much) and then I can order parts. Get the crank back by the weekend.

Cylinder walls are a little scratched, but should be fine when I hone them.

As soon as I get the parts back here, I should be able to start putting the thing back together with measuring everything out.

Will keep you all informed when it comes together.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

Update: Block is scored a little too much that honing won't take the scratches out. We are going to bore it 0.030 over. When I get the crank back, should be tomorrow, I will know what kit to order and then we can get this thing going with getting back together.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

Sorry. Won't have pics for you. Just get your butt over here to see it. Anyway, ordered parts today. Found a good rebuild kit without pistons. Did some searching and found a set of hypereutectic pistons for $76 - Summit Racing is running a special on these. They are flat top pistons and +6.00 cc. Makes compression a little better and is a good upgrade. Best part - found both rebuild kit and pistons $2 cheaper than a stock rebuild kit with cast pistons. Will be sending the money to Summit Racing tomorrow and have the parts by Thursday or Friday. Then the block can go to the machine shop to boring. We are going 0.030 over due to the piston skirts scoring the cylinder walls and the crank is already done and ground 0.020 undersized. Can't wait to get the parts and get this thing to machine shop.

Have the block prepped for the machine shop. Waiting for UPS to drop off the parts so I can get it there and get the work done.

Engine block at machine shop. Hope all goes well. We will probably see it back in about 2-3 weeks.

Not sure why so long. Could be that they have a lot of work and will get to it as the next in line or something like that.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

Maybe they are "Aging" the block. I have heard about this: Its a special process where they put the motor on a special table, called a "Back burner" and it sits there and... Well... Ages! LOL, J/K

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

Yeah. My block is still there and it's been almost 3 weeks. Found out one of my main caps were cracked and have to get it align honed. Hopefully I can get mine back soon. I told them to let me know how yours is going and if any problems to let me know asap.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

I still have my vote in on the "aging" thing...

On a totally unrelated note, I scored at the G.C.C. auto swap meet on sunday!! Got a "Collapsable" spare tire and 3.73 gears with an EATON trac-loc posi unit. Also a LT-1 axle with brakes that I will most likely be selling.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

Got the block back today and installed the crank, rear plugs and camshaft with lifters. Got first 2 pistons installed already and the gaps are coming out good for the rings. Hope to get it all together by the end of Saturday and get it over to you. Jason, come over to help get this done so he can have his car back. Then we go on the cruise downtown.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

Engine done and gone to be installed. Worked on it all day with Jason and we got everything together today. The bottom end came out great. All clearances were dead on and end play was good. Ring gaps all measured out well without any filing (used non-file fit rings, but still checked the end gaps to be safe). Jason did the valve seals, which half were missing to begin with. Also found the seals that were there to be so bad and fell apart on us. Glad we did all that. Soocrispy, let us know if you run into any problems when its in the car and you are getting it running. I can direct you from there.

Now it's the radiator. Andy stripped the bottom fitting for the transmission line to go into. I will see what I can do tomorrow about getting another one.

yeah about that.... the thing was already smashed, we got a new one in, got the car running leak free, and timed. But yesterday the car just died on him comin back to the apartment, ended up being the ignition module in the dizzy, just got it all swapped out and the car is offically back on the road....for now lol

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

Finding the bugs is kinda fun, unless it strands you like it did Chris. But we are working out the bugs from the guy who owned the car before Ryan. At least we are going to make it reliable for him. I'm glad to see everything is working out and we are getting everything corrected for it.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

fixed the injector o rings today, one injector had a shredded lower ring explaining the vacuum leak and another had a cracked upper ring

all fixed now, it seems to drive a little more sluggish like a minor loss of power so we're gonna check the timing again, resest the minimum air and clean up his IAC

oh and i decided to clean up that other motor and see what i could find on it, i cut all the weather packs because alot of mine have broken off and i also got that ignition control module for soocrispy and i found an extra map sensor, always good to have a spare lol

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

There shouldn't be any need to recheck the timing. We set it at about 6-7 degrees. Please don't move it from there. If you can, reset the computer and try it again. Everything should be good to go from there.

Re: Soocrispy's engine update

fuel comsumption is up and power is down which is why i wanted to check it just to be sure its not out of wack, that was a pretty wicked vac leak and last time we timed it with a leak it changed like 2 degrees, i want to clean the IAC and reset the minimum air but i have to find time to do it which is the challenge
