Im still not too sure on how that Plenum works, but hey, I do know that its rare. There is a guy here in my town that actually has an authentic SLP 383 Firehawk. Its forest green and its a BAD *****. He has the special number that is supposed to have or whatever. 1-28 with 3 scrapped, I think. Im not too familiar with the Firehawks. But I do love the car. Just for ****s and giggles, I raced him in my 305 (yes, i knew the outcome before we raced) So that I could see just how fast they really are... Needless to say, by the time I hit 60, he was practically in he next town. I dont think that a C5 could hang with it. Ive been talking to him recently and he may join GS3. Wahoo. A rare car!

Jason, yeah his name is Mike. Both his 'Hawk and mine are stored at the same place down there. BTW, #024 is forest green, Mike's car is Dark Jade Gray Metallic, same as my GTA.

His car does not have a T-Ram however.

If you want to lean all about Firehawks, go here:

What it grey? Its been a while, so I could be mistaken. All I know is that I would do just about anything to get my hands on one. I saw a guy buy one online with under 2k on it for 11,500. Is that a good price or a rip-off? I think its worth it because of how rare it is. Thanks for the link, Im checkin it out now.

PS. How often do you drive your car? If I owned one, I wouldnt be able to have it away from me, or stored for that matter..

OK, I have to ask, How does he smog that thing in CA. with a MiniRam? Does he have trouble?

I know "people" will smog anything, I'm just curious if that is the route he has to go.

First, it isnt a Mini-Ram, its an LT1 Intake. That was the only 383 made by SLP/GM and it came with an LT1 intake. LT1 is smog legal in California (you can go forward on intake years, just not backwards).

Are you sure about that intake? It doesn't have the fuel crossover like any of the distributor-less LT1 intakes. It also looks like it has a provision for the thermostat, though it's hard to tell how it is connected to the radiator outlet with the SLP intake ducting.

It looks exactly like TPIS' MiniRam.

The grooves on the top and how it T's out at the TB. Also the cast injector bungs at the base of the manifold. If the engine pic was just a bit closer I could tell if it said TPIS under the injectors. Maybe SLP just repackaged it like company's do with Edelbrock's hight flow TPI intake manifold.

Jerry, the person that originally started this thread, has an original GM LT1 test manifold that was used prior to the LT1 release. There were a few made that "snuck out". These manifolds were used on SBC of the conventional manner, not Gen II SBC mind you. They had the distributor hole and (IIRC from seeing Jerry's manifold) had the thermostat housing as well. IIRC, TPIS copied that intake from GM and rebadged it and made money on it, since GM did not want to sell those to "hot-rodders".

Ya, Jerry's intake has that cast GM look to it, still much different than this. His has similar ridges on the top like the TPI plenum. The cast injector areas are rouded individually and there are noticable EGR provisions. An interesting piece and a lucky find.

Hold on a sec, you know you might be on to something. It does indeed look EXACTLY like that MiniRam. The fact that it is an LT1 intake was speculation done by me and the owner as SLP did not know what it was. Also Mike bought the Vette LT1 covers to put on the car and he said they did not fit.

I bet you are correct, it is a MiniRam but did they have MiniRam's in 1995-96 when that motor was turned into a 383?

TPIS said that GM copied the LT1 intake from their miniram. So from that, if indeed true, the miniram was first and then the LT1 intake.

GTA92

Do you know the S# of the aluminum blocks used on the three SLP cars. The number will be stamped on the front of the block just under the water outlet on the intake. I have blocks # 197 & 228.

Jerry

P.S. That intake looks like a mini ram to me. All of G.M. units will have a place for the egr valve.

It's probably an even more accurate picture than the one I posted earlier. Technically, the picture I gave is for a MiniRam II. I believe the MiniRam I, which should be the available model in '93, doesn't have the gap below the plenum and between the runners. It is cast all the way down like the version on the Firehawk.

If this was true, the miniram II or retrifitted LT1 intake would pass smog?

No. The full context of the smog law includes changing over an entire motor and bringing along with it all of the newer, more stringent, smog gear. It doesn't actually allow for "pieces" of a newer motor to be legally grafted on to an older motor.

In the case of an LT1, you couldn't simply put a Millican-modified intake on your gen1 smallblock and expect it to pass a visual inspection, irregarless of the fact that he blocks off the EGR port. You would need to swap the entire LT1 and all of it's related smog equipment into your car and get a referee to issue a change certificate.

Similarly, the MiniRam I and II do not have provisions for EGR so they would technically not pass a Kalifornia inspection.

Right, I knew it was not legal. Just shouldn't go around saying that you can switch intakes so someone gets the wrong idea. I suspected that Jason didn't mean exactly what he said.

I'm not always right, but I think I can say with more than 99% certainty that a 383 was never a Firehawk option for those cars--it would have to have been owner installed--3 were aum. blocks as mentioned though and I believe were in the neighborhood of 366 cu in.

Yes, If you read closely, i said that an LT1 was legal... then I said, "go forward on intake years" i meant the entire engine, i mis spoke there...according to the firehawk webpage, he asked for more power, and since he spent the cash, they built it... read it

Thanks. I just updated the page to reflect that it is a MiniRam instead of an LT1 intake and I also told Mike the owner about it. Thanks for pointing that out guys!
