I've always wondered what that material was called myself.LOL!

It's obviously some kind of "industrial grade" heat pressed cardboard-like filler material.

The closest material to that door-panel stuff you're talking about is probably cabinet backing. You know, the kind of cardboard "backing material" they give you when you buy a cheap unassembled cabinet/book shelf from a home improvement/furniture store.

I'd call a few custom auto uphostery places. I betcha they'll know what it's called.

If you are looking to do custom door panels, my recomendation would be to either get a sheet of "tempered masonite" from a home improvement center or get a sheet of aluminum from a metal supply place and use your old panels for a pattern to cut it out. The factory uses some sort of cardboard material because it is cheap. I'm sure the question of "best" never entered into the "General's" calculations.

actually that makes sense, everything is cheap from the factory, that is were modding comes is. what is tempered masonite, and cabinet backing sounds like it would work also...thx for the help.

I'd also do some digging online. There are companies that make plastic backing panels. All you then need to do is cover them in the material of your choice.

They tend to cater to the hot rod set, but you never know what you might find.

You might even try the web sites for some of the hot rod shows on cable TV. Shows like Horsepower TV, Trucks...etc have all done interior resto segments. Typically they provide links to the vendors they use and may even have some "How to" info. on their sites.

Masonite is a wood composit product available at home supply centers. There is tempered and standard types. If I remember correctly regular masonite will bend, and is sometimes used as a "bender board" around a garden. Tempered masonite is very stiff, and wiil break if you try to bend it. It is frequently used as a base under padding and upholstery on stools. I think it is also sometimes used for the bottoms of drawers in dressers, and other furniture.

The only downside is see to the masonite is that it will be kind of heavy.

Here's a link to a company that makes ABS panels. They do offer "universal fit" panels that you can trim to size.
