I just got a 350 block and I need some machine work done to this block. Can you guys please let me know of someone or somewhere that does good machine work for a reasonable price? Thanks

Machine work I'm thinking of doing?

1. bore it out 60 over
2. Hon it
3. clean the block
4. Magnaflux it
5. install pistons on rods
6. balance it

Why would you Bore a 350 block over that Much..? .40 would be better.. Than .60.. Just thinking..

 

ive always thought boring was just to clean up the bores and not for performance gains.

 

well, it could be used for performance gains when trying to get right up against a CID limit.

 

Yeah If that's the fact that needs to be.. But .60 for a sreet hot rod.. .60 over better have a good working cooling system and don't plan on sitting on the 5 to long.. my .02 from reading.. .40 sounds cool..

 

You go .030" on a first rebuild, usually. .040" is a cleanup on the second rebuild if it needs it. Only go .060" as a last resort.

 

And, I would only do that on an older block, not on the later ones (thin castings).

 

Now that you brought this up, my buddy gave me a 350 small block that he pulled from a 71 camaro. I wanted to see if you guys could tell me if this block would work out for me and would it be able to pass smog?

 

technically you can get any sbc past smog, however, the law says that you are not allowed to use an older than your model year casting for an engine.

 

Most techs wouldn't know what year an engine was anyway. You would, however, not be able to run a carb on an '89 RS. You'd have to go TBI or TPI. If the tech really knew what he was doing, he'd also be looking for centerbolt valve covers. Just some thoughts...

 

And dont forget .... The Drivers side Dip Stick is a dead giveaway to an older Block.

 

They do know the year of the blocks because of the dipstick tube. on the older blocks its located on the driverside and after 1985 it was moved to the passenger side

 

Get a new block. Like everyone has said here .060 is way too much. I prefer not to go over .030, but like mentioned .040 is fine. Find a block that you can do .030 get some nice forged pistons and rods and be happy.

I have a 4 bolt one piece rear seal that will clean up at .040 but it is not a roller block.

 

The only thing I have is a complete Balanced and Blueprinted block. LT4 Hot cam, TRW forged pistons, forged rods, forged crank, Moroso pan, Cloyes double roller timing set, high volume pump, ARP waveloc, Etc... Though it might be out of your price range... Also selling Super Ram and AFR 195's... As long as the price is right. Otherwise they will go into a future project.

 

I think 1979 was the last year for the driver's side dipstick, and 1980 Chevy moved it to the passenger side.

 

well I had a 84 monte carlo with a 305 driverside dipstick tube and yes it was the original motor
