smog pump?
i have a 91 camaro rs its got about 90k miles on it, for the last couple of weeks theres been this raddling noise consistent with the sound of my engine, i had a friend look at it he said one of the pullys just might need to be tightened up cuz it looked like one of them was shaking, i brought it to my shop and left it there then they called back saying it needs a new smog pump..... i never even heard of that... he said a brand new smog pump would cost me about $400 or i can have them put in a "reman" on for less than $200. I was just wondering if anyones had this problem before? Or if anyone can give me more info on it, it would be appreciated.... thanks!

Re: smog pump?
The smog pump is part of your AIR system and is vital to the proper function of your emission equipment. It sucks air in, then distributes it into the AIR tubes on your exhaust manifolds and the AIR management tube on your catalytic converter. The purpose of this is to introduce oxygen into the exhaust stream so it fully burns the harmful emissions from the exhaust both before the cat (directly upon exit of the exhaust port via the exhaust manifold AIR tubes) and inside the cat (via the AIR management tube).

Re: smog pump?
Possibly, but not likely. More likely would be the cat would fail sooner and that would cause your high numbers.

Re: smog pump?
Theoretically yes, if will cause the AIR system not to function properly. Which will result in worse smog results.

Re: smog pump?
My 88 GTA has the smog pump removed. I currently live in NC where emission tests are not required for pre 96 cars. However, I'm moving to CA next year. Does anyone know if it is possible to pass CA emissions without the smog pump. I still have a cat and gre valve.
