Which Cam?

I want the Socal advice on a cam as most of you Socal People are all smog legal. I want a cam that will give me more power, but it must be able to pass smog. I am ready to yank on the tiny Powermax 2032 and upgrade. What would give me a noticable gain? My mods are in my sig.

Re: Which Cam?

Look at some of the SoCal car's sigs. We all have to pass emissions inspections. I passed pretty easily with the Comp Cams XFI 268.

Re: Which Cam?

Passed with modded TPI. A functional EGR system will soon be incorporated (by me) into my HSR. I feel confident I will pass with EGR adaptation, but we'll know for sure next October- November (2010).

Re: Which Cam?

It still isn't 50 state legal though. I thought Holley was trying to get an EGR HSR going?

Do you think I would notice a good gain from that cam? How about the VooDoo cams?

Yes I think the Comp XFI268HR-113 would be great for you.

Re: Which Cam?

I say Call the cam builder of your choice, give them your specs & let them rec a cam. It will come to a point of whether you want a quick street car or a fast drag car. (that passes or doesn't pass smog)

Re: Which Cam?

I also think the comp 268 XFI is a good choice. All the people I have seen with it on here have at least 320 hp at the wheels and pass smog. Its the one I want to use for my build, but thats quite a ways away.

I've never had good luck with any cam company that knows TPI engines. They all know either carb engines or LS1s.

Re: Which Cam?

So I know the xfi 268 is popular, but would it give me more power than the lpe 219? I know the 268 is a lot more popular, so I'm assuming it will give me more power. Also, what type of power increase should I see with the 219 over my powermax?

Re: Which Cam?

Are you going to do an head and manifold port work? If no, then the 219 will be fine. If yes then the 268XFI or the 280XFI will be fine.

How much lift will your Trickflow heads handle? There are a couple of versions available.

Re: Which Cam?

I planned of getting the superram ported, not so much the heads though... I might if it isn't too much.

For the version of the heads, the receipt is at home... a thousand miles away. So ill call my dad and have him get me the part number.

I think I have these... the valve springs that came with the heads were weak and broke, so we have a stronger set of valve springs.

Re: Which Cam?

Ok, that head is limited to .540" lift. The XFI268 camshaft is rated at .570" lift with 1.6 rocker arms. So you would have to run 1.5 rocker arms if you chose that cam.

How much of a power difference would there be between the two cams?

Between which two cams? I'd still recommend the XFI268. Allen had great results with it.

Between the xfi 268 and the lpe 219 cam. Is it going to be a noticable difference from my current powermax 2032?

Re: Which Cam?

The 2032 is 214/220, right, but only .460 lift. The XFI268 is .540 lift with 1.5 rockers, I think. And its 218/224. Yes I'd say you will notice a difference. Also, the XFI268 is about 10 years newer technology than the LPE219.

Okay, go time. Sticking with my 350 and going to have it rebuilt before I head to japan and throw it in. Going to get the heads ported, the 268 cam is what im looking at. Hows that sound?

Re: Which Cam?

Found out my valve springs can take up to 600 lift, and i'm using 1.5 rockers... How much of a difference from the 268 to the 280 be?

Re: Which Cam?

Big difference duration wise. Not much lift wise. Vincent is running the 280 along with a couple of others. Como can also do a 274 as the lobes are listed in the catalog. Might be a good compromise. As to lift with 1.5 rockers you don't have to worry. You will be way under .600" lift.

Re: Which Cam?

Will it pass the sniffer with a 383, 280 XFI Cam, Ported TrickFlows, Superram? That's another concern. I see alot of you with high 300's to the rear tires and passing the sniffer.

I mean I could go Scat Forged 355, but a scat forged 383 kit is only like $40 more... What would you all do Cubic inches wise?

Re: Which Cam?

Hows your cat? If the tune is right, it can be done.

I would go with the 268. Going with a 383 instead of 355 is mostly a matter of do you want to clearance the block, if you're replacing everything else anyway.

Re: Which Cam?

If you're more concerned with the sniffer and gas mileage, go with the XFI268. If you want more horsepower and dont mind the additional tuning headache, go with the XFI280. Its your call.
