Picked up another IROC

Some of you may have seen it for sale here by Jason89rs.
Jason is a great guy, knows his stuff about these cars.

It is a driver, but it needs some love of course like most 3rd gens
Typical stuff, weather stripping, good tune up, nothing really major other than a good paint job, body is pretty straight, no rust underneath, but I kind of like it's patina as they call it
It is just surface rust and comes off easily, but I have named him "rusty"

Drove it from Beaumont back to my place in Tustin, no issues, drives great on the freeway, and runs hot in traffic, just like most other 3rd gens.

So, now I have 2 IROC's, and one, not as happy of a wife lol but I am excited to have a new project.
I can't believe someone else didn't ****** this one up at the low price Jason was asking before I did. I feel like I did really good, as I have never seen a running driving true IROC-Z advertised on CL this low. Everything on CL is 2k or more, and needs a transmission, or allot of work just to get it driving again or is 1K or more with no motor.

Anyone know a 3rdgen friendly smog shop in Orange county? Legit of course.

Car ****

That has a nice straight body! Good luck with your project.

Tell your wife it's just like rescuing a labrador retriever, or a kitten from the pound.

Re: Picked up another IROC

Nice! It seems to share the patina with my new-to-me Formula.

I ended up paying $1800 for mine (wanted 2250). It was non-opped, and had been sitting 10 years aside from some attention to the FI. It runs great, but I've already put on new tires and swing arm linkages. Will be swapping rest of the steering and suspension components within a few weeks, and then handling interior details, pop up lights, and rear hatch latch.

Also wondering where the best place to take her to get smogged. Running on a 30 day pass until the 3rd of next month.

Here's a picture showing solidarity with the paint. The roof matches your patina more.

Oh, the wife is super happy about this one and was already searching CL for another.. I told her she'll have to wait a few months til this one is fairly tip-top.

Dude!! I had been eyeballing that car on CL!! I liked that one allot, I am glad someone picked it up, looks nice for the money too! Actually, my wife is OK with it, but she told me no more cars unless I sell one for another one.

And smog...Oh boy, I finally got this one passed today, but after going to 3 other shops before, no shops seem to want to mess with these older cars. I went to Goodyear, Tustin Ranch and tire in Tustin. They seemed at first, like my car was just going to fail, but the shop manager even seemed shocked it passed lol but a pass is a pass, everything was actually pretty good only the HC's were high at 93 PPM and they allow 97 PPM on the 15mph test. Everything else was well within range.

Just be wary, some shops will try and screw you around giving you BS that your cat isn't the right one, or something. One guy told me he had to fail me because HE did not have the proper adaptor for the fuel fill neck to do the EVAP test WTF??
lol, but it is done now!

Another shop, he went STRAIGHT for my cat...seriously, grabbed his flashlight and mirror and layed down and told me in like 5 seconds I had an illegal cat on the car as he could not see any CARB/EO numbers and he could tell the cat was not original, and it is not original, but wtf is that BS?? He told me I had to go to a muffler shop to see if they could find a CARB number somewhere on it blahblahblah...,.eff him lol

I was surprised too at that price, but then again I didn't put it on CL because I didn't want to weed through the low ballers, tire kickers and just plain thieves to sell it either. I think the rust scared people off and I probably didn't take the most flattering pictures and it looked alot worse than it really was. I probably could have put a cheap paint job on it and it would have had alot more inquiries, but the wife wanted it gone.

Hehehe now your wife can be unhappy with it.

lol actually my wife is being really really cool about it, she knows how I am with cars. I drove it to work today, lol, she asked me how soon I was getting it painted...she said she hoped non of her co-workers saw her in it lmao

I just need to get that TV cable replaced, it is annoying!!

Good looking car, all my buddies at work loved the "patina" and cannot believe what a good deal I got

Yep that TV cable pissed me off. The last month or two the housing must have really started letting go because it wasn't that bad before.

Yep it was a good deal, but feel free to bring me more money if you feel guilty . It wouldn't have been a good deal if didn't pass smog though

That's a cool car. Congrats!

I'm pretty sure I saw it posted on one of the FB pages I'm on. I'd way rather have a car with that sort of original patina, rather than a quickie paint job.

Thank you Chazman, it is growing on me(the patina) and I love the car, I kinda hate to remove it almost.

lol, no guilt here!! BUt next meet that we go to I will buy you a burger and fries
Even if it didn't pass smog, still a good deal, I just would have had to get it fixed, but that's not the case, as I knew getting it from a fellow 3rdgenner is the way to go. I already have a parts list going of stuff I want to do and stuff that needs done first, of course, needs come before wants.

If you want to remove it, get a bottle CLR, pour some in a bucket of water and a soak a green scotchbrite pad in it. Then scrub it to remove the rust.

Wait, let me find a link. Here you go. I did this on a field find AMX and it came out looking pretty cool.

Wow those pics look cool, I am going to have to give this a try! I am definitely thinking at some point I want to get the car painted but for not this will remove the rust, and still leave a cool patina on the car

You'll probably want to be wearing gloves while you do it....
