295/50-16

I have an 86 IROC, and I want some big tires. I know that BFGoodrich sells radial T/A's, and I want to hear from some folks that have them. I have the stock wheels and I don't want to change them. I like them. I want to stay with 16", because I have Intrax lowering Springs and it looks great I think. Do they rub, what mods did you need to make? Does anyone have a lowered car with these size tires?

Dude they would never fit the rims. Stock rims 16x8 those tires are approx 10in wide. Even if you got them on the rims they would wear out very quicky. Try 255/50r16s.

Yea, I hate to spoil ya fun, cause 295's would be some meat, but I had 255/50's on my Iroc wheels, and it was just about the limit.

I went back to 245's, because it felt like the 255's were flexin over the wheel. Yea, could also be because they had too much sidewall. Mostly I think you will wreck any kind of handling improvements (or traction) if the tire is wider than the rim. And it looks wierd.

Well, BFGoodridge also sells the 265/50-16. I know that will fit but you guys still think that will hender my handling? I was watching an old IROC race and there tires they use have a huge sidewall. It is like a 55 or 60 series. I bet there cars still handle well.

Yea, that is a better idea. Remember that another way to increase the contact patch is to increase the overall diameter of the tire. This creates a larger 'flat spot' on the bottom. Just check the specs on those 265/60's make sure they aren't going to run into anything, they prolly won't. Personally, I'd stay with 245/50 or 255/50 in the front. 265/60 or 55 might work quite well.

Iroc race car tires are exactly that- race car tires. They are limitied to a certian diameter rim( I believe 15") but the sidewall is about 8X's as stiff as a BFG Radial T/A. Traction on a T/A is like an iceskating rink. My suggestion is the Comp T/A at the least. I run 18" Iroc replica's with BFG G_Force KD's.

Here is the thing, I have a lot of motor and I need some meats to go on the back. Put it this way, second gear at 45-50 mph, put it in the secondaries and white smoke everywhere. I need some 11 inchers but I can't find an offset even close. Do you have any ideas? 265's just won't be enough tire, unless I go with slicks, and that it out, no cheater slicks either.

So you can launch at full power, or does that smoke em too?

j/k

Yes, I hear ya. I just moved up to some 275's on a 9.5 inch wheel. Honestly, I can't say that I can launch any better on the 275's than on the 245's. Its confusing. I may be wrong, and hopefully other smart people here will check this, but with that kind of power, the suspension is a major part of launching, or even putting power down at 45-50mph. More tire will only help so much, and I think that for what you are asking for, the best you can do is a drag radial or Hoosier slick, but you said you don't want to do that (neither do I) I see you have some suspension stuff in your profile, maybe some searches on LCA angle and spring stiffness will help you.
