I don't know about the whole "ripping" thing, but the steering boxes to have a habit of cracking. This is why GM put a "wonderbar" on there IROC's. It's basically a metal bar that connects the front part of the frame together to keep it from flexing too much. If you can find an IROC in a junkyard you could put it on your car, or you could just go to Globalwest and get one of theirs. (that's what I did) They call it a steering brace though, and I think it's like $50 or so.

1985-90 IROC's with the 16" rims. Of course they probably won't have rims on them by the time you find them.

I had the same problem with an 84 i had but mine turned out that the brace on the other side of the steering box was loose and a crack started............and spread........and spread..From what i was told, it is a common thing and the guy at the body shop reinforced it ,welded and installed a new steering box for me for $200.00
Yeah that is what happened to mine a crack started and sprad and spread and spread it is gonna be 300.00 but I love my car she is worth it I hope the IROC trick works I looked on my junk cars and they all have the brace inever noticed it before thanks
