Question About Borg-warner 9-bolt
Question About Borg-warner 9-bolt
I have a question about the borg-warner 9-bolt. i have an 89 IROC w/ a 350 TPI. i was underneath my car the other day and saw on the rear end "Borg-Warner". I was shocked. I had no idea i had a borg-warner rear end. i have heard many stories about it, and i didnt have a clue that i had it. my question is: is it posi-traction, and what is the gear ratio??? i know there is supposed to be a tag on the rear end, but i dont know if there is a code that tells you the ratio or not.
i also plan on beefing up my 350 or dropping a big block 454 in it later, so will the BW 9-bolt be strong enough to handle the horsepower???
thank you for the help

Welcome to the boards and the 9 bolt club.
Can you get the RPO codes from your car? Look for G80 denoting limited slip (IE posi) and G92 denoting the performance ratio. Otherwise, you have the 350 so you probably got the 2.77 rear like the rest of us.

The owner of the above site, Miles is a member here. Has been running a 427BB 500HP Chevy in his 3rd gen for over 3 years drag racing it on his BW 9-bolt. No problems.
He is one, of very few......
We in the diff business call the GM Gov Lock a "Grenade lock". A few years back, one of the Border Patrol SOV's (special op vechicle) came in on a hook, and upon looking at what once was a cover was no more. The little 'watch' parts and the carrier itself in the Gov Lock...well basically exploded upon landing from the "air" they caught on the way back to the station.......so yeah I guess I can say I have.

I have never seen any advertised numbers either, but rest assure you can brake anything with enough power. A 9-bolt and a 7.5-6" 10 bolt are pretty close to the same, but the 9-bolt does have press-on axle bearings, so in effect it is already stronger. I have seen both live with 600 RWHP.....there is a guy over in Phoenix Az. that works at one of those automotive institutes, I think it was a 95 F-body, it WAS impressive!!!!! And for the 9-bolt theres a couple of Cats here with Big Blocks makin some real numbers too........

i had this "gov lock" in an 84, until it broke. i replaced it with a regular 10 bolt unit. This was the best driving, handling and overall performing posi i have ever driven. Does any body have any info on how they work?? where to get them??
