Anyone using Z28 wheels with slicks?

I was thinking of getting a set of 80's style Z28 wheels for the drag strip. Is anyone else doing this? Are these wheels heavier than my IROC'S? They are 15" so i could probally get a nice slick for them and the more the sidewall, the better the traction, right!? They are fairly cheap and are all over Ebay right now. They are the five star wheels with the large center caps that stick out. Sorry i do not have a picture. They seem lighter and it is better than droping some $$$ for a nice set of drag wheels right now b/c cash is kinda tight. Is this a good idea or should i stick with my IROC's? I will mostly be riding on Z06 wheels for the street but for the track i would rather not use the adapters. Any input you guys may be able to give would be great, thanks.

If your only gonna use them for track use only, why buy a set of Welds and have a bunch of $$$, when he's already got the Z06 rims... anyways, most the season I used stock steel pontiac rims for the back of the bird, when I changed carbs I started spinning the tire on the rim, not much, maybe 1/2-1" a race, when I went to natinals I changed the slicks over to the factory aluminums to match the front so it'd look a little better, told them to put their tire snot around the bead so it wouldn't spin on rim-it was a lighter combo than the steel rim, but I did'nt see any gain from it. The tire "glue" did the trick as far as not letting my rim spin inside the tire and that produced a 1.82 60' EVERY pass, not the up and down 60' like I was having. It'd be anywhere from the 1.80-1.86 and it's hard to dail when it's that inconsistent from the start.

Let me clarify, the question was supossed to ask if these are effective at the track. I had $$$ for the Z06 wheels b/c i found a set for cheap in mint condition so i layed up the money and soon after sold my mint 2001 SS wheels. So i really did not pay much for the Z06's. I also used the same tires since they had less than 100 miles on them. For the price of one Weld i can pick up a whole set of these wheels! Now, this is just for now. I could probally just save money and get a nice set next spring but i am looking at other alternatives. Just trying to see if anyone is having success with these wheels, thats all. Thanks

Personally I think your better off getting a 15" rim cause like you said tire selection/pricing/effectivness is gonna be better. I know I hear alot of people running Nitto's and I've seen a few at the track on street racing days, it might have been the drivers inexperience, or possibly to much hp, but more often than not there was an audible screetch when they launched-not good cause tha's saying it is'nt biting, plus 15" slicks are cheaper also so that's something to keep in mind. Just be sure to have them "glue" the bead.

Thanks again! Do i need them to "glue" them if i use drag radials too, or just the slicks? I have never known of someone having to do it to DR's. I am sure i would be more affective if i were to go with the slicks so i am still undecided on that too! The place that does my suspension work/tire&wheel swaps are in oval track racing so they should be of some assitance! They have been doing this stuff for years.

You can see from my sig that I use the Hoosier Quick Time DOT slicks, basically slicks with enough groove in them (2 lines in the center) to call them "DOT" but I'm not running innner tubes either, if I had tubes I'd just bolt the bead to the rims and be done. I currently run 14 psi at the track so that's pretty low considering. After a number of people noticed my problem they all told me to have the bead "glued" to the rim as a fix and it's worked ever since, have spun the rim in the tire yet, but I only used it at Cordova for nationals and 1 night race here at home. To me it's just insurance, after I lerarned the haed way.
