quick spring question
quick spring question
I have to install rear springs for the first time. Is it as easy as i think? Take tire off, put spring compressor on old spring, take out, put compressor on new spring, put in place and slowly decompress? Love sentence fragments.
I just had to ask to make sure i don't get any surprises. Also what color are the rear springs on the 91-92 z28. Mine are blue, not sure if they're after market or not. Thanks for the help

Someone correct me if wrong but I think you have to raise the car, unbolt the lower shock mounts, take off the panhard bar, lower rearend with jack and the spring should drop out. Don't forget about the rubber pads on the top of the spring.

Rear springs are CAKE.
raise the car by the frame, let the rear end drop down reach in there, and pull the springs out, you shouldn't even have to unbolt anything.

If you've ever had the chassis of the car jacked up and removed the shock absorbers, the diff will drop enough that (in my case) the springs will just about fall out.
It would be a good idea to remove the bolt mounting the brake line/hose union to the axle first. Otherwise you may strain the rubber brake hose as you drop the axle.

Well, I changed out my rear springs. It was not cake! Technically it was easy, but very time consuming. I got the right side done in alittle over an hour. Went to do the left side, got the spring out, went to put the new spring in, and the spring compressor slipped off and broke my finger and tore the nail off.
Had surgery, they stitched me up and i finished the spring job the next day. Well my z is still leaning to one side on the back which leads me to believe either the frame is twisted or the shocks are bad. The shocks look like the factory units.
I'll prolly get some gas-a-just kyb's to even out the sagging on the right side.
Again thanks for all of yall's advice, it did help a bit.

Next time you go to change rear springs, don't bother with the spring compressor. It's the hard way, and only complicates things.
Jack the car up and support by the frame on jack stands, with the rear end hanging free. Raise the rear end an inch or 2 by the pumpkin using a floor jack or similar. Unbolt the lower shock bolts. Lower the floor jack. The springs will simply fall out. Place the new springs in, you may have to jack the rear back up slightly as you do this to keep them from falling back out. When they're in right, jack the rear end back up far enough to put the shocks back on. Take the car back down off the jack stands. Done.

lmao. I tried that. I disconnected the shocks and the track bar, it didn't stress the brake lines either. Totally removed the floor jack from under the axle, and i still had to use a spring compressor.
