Spindle Mod for 1LE question for the gurus??????

OK guys....I now have like 95% of the parts needed for a 1LE conversion, and already modified the spindles. I have a question though, while trial fitting the parts, I noticed that the two holes drilled to mount the carrier bracket adapter aren't exactly lined up in the same plane. Meaning, that when you attach the bracket, the bracket does not sit perpendicular to the spindle(one side is higher than the other). The difference between the two surfaces is about 1/16", so its not immediately obvious. The spindles I believe are from an 84 or 85 Z. Are there differences in the earlier spindles VS later models that will require further machining, or spacers? From what I can tell, I will have to machine down the lower hole surface(not the one near the strut) to compensate for the difference, which makes the caliper carrier sit only about 1/16" of an inch away from the front side of the rotor. Can anyone shed some light on this? Many thanks in advance.....:hail:

Could you shim it?...using shims is a common techique with some caliper alignments (ie safe). Maybe you could use a machined washer like a thrust washer, thats how the Performance Machine brakes on my YZFR1 was aligned (floating disks).
Good luck.

WOW that's odd...I'd just put a "shim" or washer in there to even it up. You'll be fine.

OK, thats kind of what I was thinking, but then the bracket adapter wounldn't be sitting directly on the spindle on the upper mounting point(near the strut). Wasn't sure if that would be acceptable to have a shim in there. Does anyone have a picture of the caliper carrier and the rotor without the caliper installed, so I can see the distance between the outer surface of the rotor and the carrier? Or can someone let me know about how much distance they have there? Again, thanks for the replies. It just figures that I have a weird issue like this....

jwscab, Do you have a copy of my CD? If you do not, it has all the 1LE conversion pistures you could ever possibly want.

I would suggest not using any shims at all. 1/16" (.060") is nothing to worry about. Do another trial fit with the adapter bracket installed backwards (flat side toward the spindle). You will then notice that the adapter bracket will tend to rock slightly on the lower mounting boss.

As far as I know, I am the only one who has these 9 bolt backing plates at a reasonable price NEW.

Will they be available from your website? I didn't see them listed anywhere. And what will be the damage for a pair($$)? Thanks

They are not avilable through the website. I only have a limitied supply @ $70.00 per pair. They will fit 9 bolt or 10 bolt rears. Those of you converting your 10 bolt to the PBR ( '89 and later) style rear disc brakes will require an adapter and shim set to use these backing plates. I have these also if you need them.

It is my intention to offer these item to thirdgen.org members only, and to avoid any "commercial" sales.

If anyone is interested? Please let me know by the end of the month. After that I will be turning the entire brake oreration over to another company, and the price can only go up. The door hinge thing has taken up all of my time. As I now cover nearly all GM trucks now too.

Thanx,ANDYZ28
