Anyone have any info on having aluminum wheels cut & extended?


Looking to go from 8" -> 10" wide..

the gta wheels look nice and instead og oing to an aftermarket wheel why should he not stay with the gta wheels? they look better and give a more stealth appearance which is what he is going for now.

they might be able to help you out, give them a call and see if they do that, and what it would cost, ect.

I have considered widening my GTA wheels also. What are your thoughts--1" on each side or 2" on one side (which side?)? Maybe using a front wheel widened out 2"?

I like the idea of 'stock' appearing GTA wheels with some serious rubber mounted on them. After all, they are very, very light weight.

I've also considered narrowing the fronts to maybe 6" but believe I've seen some Beretta wheels (or some similar vehicle) with wheels that look a lot like the GTAs. Thoughts?

Not quite sure... but i'm leaning more towards on the inside.. That way the welds won't be visible.. (less work to polish the new aluminum anyways...)

I know there are some companies around here (orlando,fl) that will cut the barrel out of a wheel and weld in a new one.. I just have to find their numbers...

 

My 92 Z28 16" wheels on the rear are now 10" wide for the 26x11.50-16 ET Streets and the front are cut down to 6 1/2" wide for 215x60-16s next time I have them off I will post some pictures.

I just assumed that the cost of doing that would be way more than any aftermarket (or even factory) wheel would ever cost. I see on one of the posts some guy had it done for 225 a wheel...more than I'd spend on 'em, but like he says...An items "worth" is subjective to the owner.

 

I did my wheels at no cost to me only my Labor.

With this tire combo last week I got a 1.59 60ft at a street legal only track.

How much would you charge to make my back rims into 10 inchers. I have some extra wheels if you need material.
I have been interested in this for a while.
Does anyone make a 315mm drag radial for a 16 inch rim?

The 16 inch drag radials only go to a 255 ( 9.7 wide tread ) and that will work on a 8 inch rim so no need for a 10 inch wheel for them.

The only reason I made 16 x 10s was for E.T. streets and the ones I run are 26x11.50-16 and work better on a 10 inch rim. Now Hoosier has a 28x14.50-16 quick time pro and that's my next set of tires.

I run 16 inch Nitto DRs on the street and have major traction problems with 3.73 gears and a Yank ss3600 converter. The only DR that's wider is in 15 or 17 inch so the next set of rims I do will be 17 x11s and that's after I finish a new motor for the car.

Does M&H still make the 305/40/16? That would fit nicely without any bulge.

I've thought about having mine done. What I really wish for is some 17" GTA wheels :hail: That would be nice.

 

You can buy some cheapo and light stock car rims for under $75.00 each to put slicks on. Jerrywho did a great job on his, but in my opinion, that's a little shakey for street use.

 

The M&H 305 is rated to the side wall and is still only 9.7" on the ground.

I have a set thats in the shop right now and will be done in about three weeks 17x11 for the rear with 5.75 backspace and 17x9.5 for the fronts. The wheels will be direct bolt on with no spacers needed.

i also am a big fan of "stealth" the other day i got pulled over doing 70 in a 55, no ticket, why? because my car apears totaly stock, is white in color, and becouse i was dressed well.(just got off work). if i had been wearing, say, my TGO tee-shirt, and had aftermarket rims and tires, i would have gotten that ticket.

it's all about "stealth" that and kissing piggy ***. that helps too. "yes officer, of course i will drive 55 from now on, no i totally agree, i was being rather inconciderate to other road users, yes officer......"

 

I have also been hoping to find a company to make 17 inch WS6 rims. I want to factory crosslaced rims, but I want wider and in 17 inch. Dante Designs makes 17 and even 18 inch chrome IROC rims. Wonder if they'll ever make em for the WS6. JERRYWHO-I can't wait to see the pics of your big and bad crosslaced/honeycomb, "whatever you wanna call em," rims. If you find a cost effective way to make more let me know because I'll be first in line to get em. I was going to call Dante Designs and see if they had any plans to make these.

 

I would love to widen my rear Z28 rims, that would be so cool. I love how they look, but only 7" wide

 

Hate to bring this thread back but does anyone have any other companies they know of that widen rims?? i would like to get a few quotes on what it would cost. is there anyone who has had this done???

Where did you pick up the inner section of the rim, or did you just cut off the inner lip, and weld in a 2" strip? I'd love to do this myself. One of the guys at work just sent a set of rims to weldcraftwheels.com in MI ($175/wheel). They should be getting here any minute now.

went to their site and called the local dallas store..

$209 a wheel to widen up to 2"... they dont widen more then that.


so i could make my 16x8" rims 16x10"..


just called www.weldcraftwheels.com and got a quote to make my 16x8s into 16x11s.... 185 a wheel..



now i just have to see if they make a 315 series 16" tire.. lol.

 

I think that hoosier makes the R3S04 in a 16" that wide. but you might not want to run that on the street. but you would have wicked good handling

 

for the hell of it, i looked them up just now (can you tell its a slow day at work? )

275/45ZR16 is the widest 16" they make.

 

sidenote:

if i showed up to autocross with thoes tires on, think theyd notice the stock wheels are wider? lol.

 

if you are in a competative class, that doesn't allow wider than an 8" wheel, and you win, i bet you get protested

275/45 i would think is a nice fit on a 10" wheel.

my next set of tires is going on my new set of rims anyway, so its a moot point for me... i was mostly curious about price.... that and well... i have a lil side project that envolves taking a small, 4cyl car, backhalfing it, and sticking a SBC in there... i think widening the stock rims would take sleeper up to the next level.. (its already high up there)


new rims are already 17x11 and 17.9.5.... going to go with a 315 series rear.... not positive on the front..

I have two sets of GTA rims (for my GTA ) and want to keep the stealth factor.

When you add up the costs for the rims I want in 17 inch size, it is $1000, plus 4 new tires. Having two wheels widened at $400 total plus tires is a better deal for me right now...I would like the 16x10 on the rear...

Now the tire choices are pretty limited obviously, but at least it is an option....and if someone made crosslace 17" rims that looked like original, this wouldn't be a discussion

 

you gotta love the stealth factor. most people would never notice 315's out back or from the side. i would love to find a clean set of iroc rims to do this with.

btw: jerrywho, is that a kawasaki mule??

What other sizes are out there...I couldn't find any on Tire Rack...suggestions?

 

I don't like to band wheels with 2 welds per wheel. The way I did it was to do a full set of wheels (4) and make 2-6" fronts and 2-10" rears.
If you take 91-92 16" wheels and cut 2" off the inside of the fronts and cut 4" off the inside of the rears then match the front outers part and the the rear inside part and weld them you will get a 10" rear wheel thats 1 3/8s wider to the inside and 5/8s to the outside and then take the inside part from the front and the outside part from the rear you will get a 6" wheel for the front that is 5/8s narrower on the outside and 1 3/8s on the inner.
If you just band a set of rears 2" wider you will need to run wheel spacers to clear the body. The way I did them the factory offset of the 91-92 wheels helps make them fit.

While Jerrywho's method is probably the most ideal way, the ones I've seen done used strips of metal that were formed in a circle of the correct diameter with a 3 roll press, and then the ends welded together. Then the wheel was cut on a lathe in the appropriate area where the "band" is to be welded in place. Alignment is crucial so the wheel will remain concentric, and without any runout. A relatively simple job, IF you have the right equipment.

 

My co-worker got his Caprice rims back from Weldcraft, and this did weld in a 2" wide band, so 2 welds per wheel, plus the butt weld connecting the band (I wonder if the word "b u t t" will be bleeped out by the board software?). The welds were very well done, and we checked the runout with a test indicator on a Bridgeport, and everything was good.

After getting 16" GTA wheels I found out the center is to small for a 17" outer band. Now the 91-92 Camaro wheel has a 15.4" center and will fit in the 17" Budnick wheel band with no problem. I have a set but other projects are in front of them now.
