spohn torque arm install
spohn torque arm install
quick question:
I just received my spohn torque arm, and I would like to install it and set the pinion angle. However, i sent my rear sway bar off to be powder coated will there be a problem installing the torque without the sway bar in place.
Thanks Chad

I do not think it will provided the car is level. I am interested in how you set the pinion angle. I may be doing a torque arm install as well.
When you buy a torque arm from Spohn they include detailed directions for the installation and setting the pinion angle. Unfortunately, I do not have the directions with me right now. But, the pinion angle if I remember correctly in the drive shaft angle minus the torque arm angle, which is call a true pinion angle. From the factory the pinion angle is set to 0 degree. However, car with performance mod. may have a pinion angle set to be -1 degree. Some race car are set to be -2 or -3. However, this is all explained in the directions from the guy from Spohn.

cerice,

The angle finder is also included in his kit (was in mine) and is a good tool. Steve's pieces are top notch. The T/A is a work of art. You just can't say enough about his quality.

I agree the spohn piece is a superior design. Unfortunately I can not use it because my rear trans mount is not in the factory position. It looks like I will have to use a BMR unit. Anyone know if they have the same tool and documentation?
I may be adjusting rear ride height a few times so this will be needed.

I don't understand where is your trans mount in relation to the original position? Did you retrofit a different trans in? What kind if so. Spohn can fit just about any configuration of GM stuff.
92BLKL98,
Yes, my spohn torque arm did come with an angle finder. Last night I installed the torque arm it looks pretty good. I did have a lot of trouble getting the rear mount of the torque arm to fit over the rear end. But, with some persuasion I finally got it to fit. Tonight I plan on installing the driveshaft torque up all the bolts and setting the pinion angle. So far I do not have any complaints with the Spohn torque arm it is a pretty good piece of equipment.
Hopefully, I will not have any trouble with the driveshaft hitting the driveshaft loop. I have seen threads with others having this problem. However, I did not lower my car, so I should not have a problem.

I've had no trouble with the drive shaft hitting the loop and I have an LPE 3.5" aluminum D/S. My T/A came with front and rear loops. I had to slightly grind down a corner of the rear loop mounting pad and lightly massage the tunnel. Be aware that the bracket that holds the fluid lines in the left side of the tunnel will need to be moved or it will hit the T/A and you will need to grind down the bracket that holds the left parking brake cable at the rear of the tunnel. Before you drive the car and while it is still on frame jacks place your floor jack under the rear axle and run it through its motion to look for body contact. With the 3.5" D/S, Spohn T/A, and 3.5" Mufflex exhaust system the tunnel is definitely full.
