Rear end removal problem

I've got everything removed except for the rear control arms. The bolts will just not budge. I've got the impact gun cranked to the max (i think it puts out about 350ft/lb) but they still remain.

Anybody have similar situations? How did you deal?

been soaking in liquid wrench everyday, but still no movement.

thanks for your help

6ft peice of pipe.

Or Cut the ends off of the bolt and then pry the sheet metal back a lil bit. That should make them pop outta there.

For the correct replacement bolts, Spohn has them here and new pan hard rod bolts here.

thanks, guys. I was thinking that I'd heat up the bolt with a torch. It' seems I remember that being a trick to try with siezed bolts. Or, Maybe I'll set the garage on fire. Either way.

I put the jack under a breaker bar and jacked on the end of the bar, with the whole weight of the car on the bar, the bolts had no choice but to snap.

That's one that I hadn't thought of. Where did they snap? At the head or on the shaft. My only concern would be a deformed shaft that I couldn't extract... but I guess I'm not THAT worried.

So the nuts spun off? You could try an electric angle grinder... wear eye protection...

Success at last.

It took several days of reapplication of penetrating lube and I heated the nuts two or three times over a week and they finally broke loose and spun off. I really didn't want to have to cut them off or deal with broken bolts.

Now the question is, what do I do with this open dif, drum break rear end?

any suggestions.

Well, a quick check under the cover revealed the dreaded 15-41. So, as there aren't too many cliffs around the twin cities, maybe I can find a replacement set of gears to swap in. Although I've never done that before, you gotta start somewhere.

I think that I read somewhere that you can swap in S-10 gears from around the same years, some even had posi rears?

Anyone else hear that?

Or even better, is the rear the same length as the camaro's?

Don't waste your time with a gear install. IMO, find another rear with better gears and disc brakes. Even go with a 4th gen rear and you'll be all set. Those can be found all day long for $250-300 complete and a good gear install will run that. Yes, S10s have the same 7.5" corporate GM rear, just a different housing and spring perches, etc.

Ed
First off, Ed Miller officially owns the Suspension/Chassis/Brake Forum . I checked TGO tonight and came to this forum (my favorite) only to find the top twelve threads had all been replied to by Mr. Miller. Just wanted to take the time to say thanks for all ur info and help on these boards, its made a big difference for me, and others im sure. On that note, what Ed said is exactly what I did. I busted a few teeth on my ring and pinion gears so rather than rebuild the crappy open drum rear, I got a 95 Z28 rear for $250!!! ConsideringI was gonna get different wheels anyway, I figure I saved myself the cost of the rear adapters($150) and got 3.23 gears, posi, and disc brakes for $100. Not bad, eh?

Every time I read this quote, I can't stop from laughing my a** off! I'm sure a good friend of mine wants to do exactly that with his 2.73 rear. He has a 90 IROC that had the G92 package with 3.23 gears. When he blew it up, he didn't know much about cars, and the shop he was working at offered to help him replace the gears and carrier. He unknowingly told them to put 2.73s in, assuming that was what the original gearset was. He ended up with a 2.73 open rear instead of 3.23 posi. What a crying shame huh? LOL.
