front coil-over for third gen
I am looking for a coil-over conversion for autocross. I know of one from Art Morrison, but it is marketed for drag racing. I saw Thunder Racing has lower control arms for coil-over, but did not see the kit to convert the struts. Any thoughts?

the coil overs i have seen have all been marketed towards drag racing, myself i have not seen a front coil over kit that i like for auto-x/road-racing.

Last I heard, the strut mounts could not take the stress a coil over kit would put on them. Not without some sort of reinforcement anyways.
At least, this is what I've read.

on the other hand, people that actually have the kit, have had no problems...
so right now, my opinion is, while theres room for improvement, it can take the stresses put on it.. *shrug*
Dewey316: while you're buying tools, get a lathe... you'll need that to make a coil over kit too....

hmm, if we are turning my garage into a fab shop, i will need more than a welder and a lathe. (note: i am taking donations for the shop
)
not sure why i would need a lathe for the coil overs though :shrugs: i could get a-arms premade, coil overs from koni, qa1, biltein, eibach, h&r, or many manufactures. the key would be in how it is mounted. and how that is reinforced.

i was just reading the post, and thinking about the consequences of if something were to happen, could you imagine? people running them for autox and the supposed effects? maybe busting through cast/camber plates, through the hood.........not to mention droping the front on the groud when the strut goes through haha man theres some wicked speculations involved in the what if category....

yeap..... lets say the worse thing happens... the thing disconnects completely...
not only does that corner fall to the bumpstops, but that wheel can wobble or tilt any way it wants to on that lower ball joint. scary if it happens at the wrong time.
Dewey: if i could afford to help your cause, id have my own shop right now...

front coil-over for third gen
Good posts from you guys, I'll probally go with wieght jacks on the front with modified a-arms.
do a search on the internet and you'll find alot more helpful info. only reason i wouldn't want it for auto-x is the way it's designed your limited to adjustment. i've had mine on the all three setups and haven't had a problem. i'm running an AM strut plate with eibach ers springs, bilstein hd struts modified with custom sleeving. using pa racing chromolly a arms and k member. now i don't do alot of racing but i have put almost 4,000 miles on the street with them through detroit pot holes none the less without any problems. i definately don't beat on my car but i drive it none the less and it has held up just as well as the stock pieces.
have plenty of friends running them on the street as well as the track without any problems. i've seen cars lift up and drop alot of weight on the coilovers without any problems as well. could have been chance, who knows.....point is it works. if your really bothered about it just reinforce it a bit. i will tell you this much spring choice is very important and it took me 4 sets before i found what was right for the car. too soft and you will easily break something when you hit a good bump.
i will admit though as nice as they do work and the reduction in weight is a plus i plan to remove them for a more adjustable suspension. i don't get the full range out of them as i had hoped. roughly 2 1/2" up or down front stock although this is mainly because i'm running bilsteins. had i run koni instead i would have almost 4" up or down. so most likely some of the setup will be going up for sale shortly.
either way do your homework and make your own judgement seeing as how everyone who actually has them has no problems i'm sure you will be fine.
