How to compress parking brake spring?

My brother's passenger side caliper was leaking and my dad replaced it. It leaked again so he replaced it again. He had the parking brake off and he had to take off the spring. Now we can't compress it enough to get the cable through it to latch onto that bracket. Any tips on how we can do it? Thanks.

Two ways:

Just put one side on the car and compress the other side till it fits.

or

Take it compress it down, and put a zip tie/tie wrap around the sides, put it in place and cut it loose. Make sure that you know where it is going when you cut the springs. This way it won't hit you in the eye.

We tried to compress it with our hands but its not compressing enough. My dad put two pieces of wire through the spring, one on each side and twisted them tighter and tighter to compress it. But that only worked so long before they started slipping to the same side and compressing one side more than the other.

Don't worry about the cable just get the spring in but make sure the cable is atleast sitting inside the spring somewhere. And put some umph into it. When you get the spring in use needle nose pliers to get the cabe to a spot where you can grab it on the exit from the spring, then use the parking brake lever to compress everything and slip it on.

Or..... You can use a spring compressor designed for removing/installing door hinge springs. Works great. Cheap too....
