Slotted/Crossdrilled, Rear?

Hey guys, iv'e been lookin into getting slotted or crossdrilled rotors on my firebird but im not sure about some things.

1. why is it that i can only find front ones? does my 87 formula use the same rotors front and back?

2. how much should i pay for them?

3. which is better? cross drilled? or slotted?

i'll answer the best i can, but i only can give opinions based on experience on 2 &3...

1) Your rotors are not the same front and back, as the front rotors have the hub integrated with the rotor. There's probably not a market for rear rotors, as many 3rd gens were equipped with rear drums.

2)I wouldn't pay anything. They wont give you any benefit over stock rotors, except maybe being pretty.

3) see # 2....

there are a few companies that make them. i have gm performance parts on my rear. they ran me just under 300 for the two and don't do much more then look pretty on my car.

alot more thirdgens came with 4wheel disc then many think. there are some cheaper options out there but they don't hold up. next best bet is to do a adaptation with another style or company.

Look at www.discbrakesrus.com They have all kinds of brake parts and they are reasonably priced.

You will probably be disappointed in you put on these rotors with expectations of better braking. Remember, rears only do about 30% of the braking, the rest is in the front.

If you are going for looks, then that's just fine, they do look cool!!

not that i plan on doing this but doesn't it seem like you could almost just take a drill and make your own cross drilled rotors? especially if you took a piece of paper and some charcoal and made a template from another crossdrilled rotor?

Thanks for the website link, i just bought a set of front rotors of e-bay for lilke 100 bucks, im not sure if i should just buy stock ones for the back or if i should keep searching for a set of cross drilled rear rotors. there weren't any rear rotors at Brakes are us.com

Another supplier to check prices at is www.irotors.com.

Try a search on this board for information regarding cross-drilled versus slotted rotors. There's a lot of information and varying opinions out there.

i DID find rear rotors on this website, they were about $130 but they are under the 1LE option, i hope this doesn't mean i need to own a 1LE in order to fit these rotors?

Also, what does the Zinc plating do? is it worth the $25, does it just make em shiny?

That's a post that discusses drilling your own rotors. Basically, however, it's not a good idea, as properly made drilled rotors are cast with the holes already in them to prevent cracking that is common to "drilled" rotors.

The zinc plating keeps the areas of the rotor that come into contact with the pad from rusting, as the pad will wear the plating off of the contact areas.
