propportioning valve

I'm clueless here. I just bought a 4th gen rear end to put under my 82 trans am. I read the tech article on installing it, and the article says I need a proportioning valve. why is this?

also, when i get one, where do i get all of these fittings to install it?

three (3) 3/16ths inverted flare tubing nuts
two (2) ¼ inverted flare tubing nuts
one (1) 3/16ths inverted flare female "T" fitting
two (2) 3/16ths-inverted-male-flare-to-1/4-inverted-female-flare adapters

I read the article on installing the proportioning valve, so it seems like i can do it myself, but is this something i really NEED? and how expensive is this all going to be?

no 3rd gen prop. valve can operate the rear brakes of a 4th gen rear end like it supoosed to, so you'd need a new one.

as for the brake fittings, im sure some auto parts store/website will carry them. try earls

you need a flat sided machined looking aluminum PV from a thirdgen, i'd guess a 4th gen PV would also work. all the lines should bolt right up with no problem

You can pick up the fittings at a Pep Boys or NAPA store. I've had spotty luck getting stuff like that at AutoZone or Advance Auto. Seems like they always have room for neon lights and fart pipes, though.
