4th to 3rd gen suspension parts.

What suspension parts (if any) are interchangeable from a 4th gen? sway bars? Torque arms? Shocks, struts?LCA's? anything?

Rear shocks, sway bars, PH rod, LCA's, drive shaft, torque arm. The LS-1 drive shaft is shorter but works on the 88-89 and new 700's.

Basically if you had a 4th gen rear everything would bolt to it under the third gen it's the wheel spacing that is different and the brake brackets (I think).

I don't know but the gas tank may even interchange, I will know this in a couple of weeks.

everything in the back will, including the gas tank. torque arm too. i believe, you might wanna check, the driveshaft are will work for t-5s and 700s. 3rd gen rears are 4 in narrower, so 4th gen wheels wont directly bolt on, youd need spacers. nothing from the front will work though

I've never tried the swap myself, the info is from the book "How to Tune & Modify Your Camaro 1982-1998" by Jason Scott. page 49 stated that the shocks & springs are different!!?? My apolpgies if the info is not accurate. Anyone ever tried the swap?

maybe they were referring to the front suspension, i just looked at summit's website and their camaro shocks (KYB) are listed for 82-99, dont know if the 00 and up are any different. And the rear springs should be the same since you can use 3rd gen springs when swapping in a 4th gen rear.

Guys, I believe you and respect your knowledge. The book continues to say that the differences in the floor pan in the 4th gen created a need for a different shock than the 3rd gen. If you've done it and it works then my info is BS. Thanks for the education.

lol thats because its really hard to make books change their minds...

yea, the shock mounting, length, and everything external are the same... the valving is probly slightly diffrent, but every model of shock has diffrent valving. the 4thgens are probly valved a little softer, but they still work fine.

also note, any 4thgen aftermarket shock works... including the adjustible ones...........

An LS1 driveshaft is exactly the same length as an LT1 and 84-92 3rd gen driveshaft. Some 82-83 driveshafts are the same length also.

I put a LS1 DS in my 94 the other day and the yoke for the input shaft is shorter I think, more here say on my behalf. I didn't compare before I stuck it in (hurried, by the will to want to drive the car). Anyone know if the yokes are different length? I know they will fit on the 87-88 and up trans.

They are the SAME length, I put one into a 97 Z28, and the shaft removed was the exact same length, along with the pile of 3rd gen ones i have, except the T10 one of course.

the seal on the T56 sticks out a little further and sits on a diffrent part of the yoke... so it looks like its diffrent but its not.. mechanicly, they're still connected in the same proper places.

donno if thats the answer you're looking for, but its just somthing i though i would throw in there...

It's all good information that I can relay.

Thank-you,
Tony

Re: 4th to 3rd gen suspension parts.

So to clarify- If I get an 2000 drive shaft out of a Camaro - aluminum- it will fit with no modification in my 1989 Formula Firebird
- 5.3 - 460le set up?

As long as the trans is in the same place as stock and the 4L60 is the same dimensionally, you'll be fine.
