Help me choose...

This is my first post, and i am sure if i searched i could find many of my answers, but i dunno what to search for. I want a car to Auto-x with, and i have it narowed down to a bunch of choices...
My budget is for now 4 grand...
I know i can find a third gen for next to nothing, but my only hangup is how well will it handle? I know i can make power, and swap in a LS-1/T-56 combo... but i dunno if i can ever make the car handle well.. I have thought about just getting a C4 but that would comprise of waiting, anhd the parts are expensive, and they are complicated as all hell.. So would u guys recomend gettting a 3rd gen? I want something that can autocroos drift, and do a ropad coarse.. the car will most likely not really see the street, and i have my truck to trailer it to the track, so i don care too much about reliability.. So should i go for the F-body or pick up a 240? B/c really the more i think about this the more i am narowing it down to (3rd gen, 5.0, 240, or maybee in a year a wrx)
List of considered cars
5.0
3rd gen F-body
240
miata
WRX
MR2
Supra
RX-7
vette
Edit: how cheap are parts? what is available? are there good suspension stups that are reasonably priced out there?

considering that you are posting this on a 3rd gen board, i think most everyone will say to get the 3rd gen. one thing you need to consider though, is that if you want to do any kind of drifting...you will be better off with a front wheel drive car.

as far as suspension and handling, there are several companies out there that make really good suspension parts for these cars. the main one that people on this board use is Spohn and that is because he is a sponsor of the site. there are others out there like BMR for example that make real quality parts.

Watch out for suggestions like this when spending your money. You'll get all kinds of "expert" advice around forums like this. Take everything you hear around here with a grain of salt and ultimately of course make up your own judgement and decision.

My opinion, for 4K, I wouldn't waste my money with an f-body. You will have so much more fun with an older 13B rx7. It will give more thrill for the buck. Also for 4k, I hope you have a welder and now suspensions well or you will just be an entry. I don't care how well you drive, the car will make the driver only so fast and 4K doesn't get you much in contention of winning (at least around here in So. Cal.

that is not true at all, FWD is terrible for drifting.. Pluss i am not hardcore about that, It is just something that occurs once a month locally, I am really thuinking third gen more, and more... I love LS1s, and i have always liked third gens.. I am also still considering the 240 and an old bmw 3 series...

I'd have to agree, the rx7 was one of the best engineered cars ever produced.
