Autozone Spring Compressor

I went to Autozone today to get a spring compressor to put my front end back together, and they have changed the style of compressor from what I used when I took it apart several months ago. The one I used when I took it apart had two hooks on each end. The one they had today had two hooks on one end, with a forked plate on the other. I brought it home thinking I could make it work, but it didn't fit my Moog 7662 springs well at all. I don't trust it to stay together when the spring is compressed. This new compressor carries the same part number as the old one. I went to several Autozone stores looking for the old style one without success. Has anyone made the new style compressor work? Any good alternatives out there? I stopped by my local Harbor Freight store, and the only ones they had were for McPherson strut front ends.

ive got the eibach pro-kit on my car. I made that spring compressor work fairly easily. just put the end with the hooks as far up the spring as you can get it, and put the bottom piece underneath the a-arm. it held very solid and didnt even scuff up my springs. hope this helps.

I've played with my front springs a few times and didn't use a compressor, except for that time I had to reindex the spring and didn't want to pull anything apart.

i bought a compressor from eastwood for like 35.00 its a cheapy but for a once use it is good enough, i still had to fudge t some to make it work with a peice of pipe. i used them to reindex the front springs after install since they would not line up for me.

Go to O'Reilly Auto Parts if you have one where you live. They have the spring compressor with hooks on both ends in their loaner tools. I used it and it worked fine. Really only useful for installing springs. Not of any use to remove them.

No O'Reillys stores around here...

I looked around and found that the AmPro T75761 spring compressor that Advance Auto Parts sells is almost identical to the old AutoZone one. I picked one up for $32. It worked fine with the pipe trick.

Autozone rents two different types of spring compressors.
