need help with tire replacements

I need some new front tires and the ones I have on there now are 235 / 50 R 16. (I have 1985 IROC-Z rims)

I'm having trouble finding new ones in this size. Some ppl on this site have 245 and 255 etc. What would be a good replacement, and what do the different numbers mean? What is the differences between the different sizes?

thanks

Car: VIN=85 T/A, CAR=82/3 T/A gfx, go figure. She's a T/A anyway!
Engine: 5.0, Holley 600 cfm 4-barrel
Transmission: THM350 ??
I believe that the big number - 235,245 etc. is the tyre width in mm. The other number is the profile. This denotes how high the sidewall of the tyre is, expressed as a percentage of the tyre width. (50% etc.so for 245 50, sidewall = 122.5). The third number, no doubt you'vre realised is the rim diameter in inches.

Cheers,
Mark.

Factory stock size for the 16" IROC wheels are 245/50/16. These are common and I would forget about that odd ball size you have now.

Could I put some 225/xx/16's on there?

Would that be better, to have skinnier tires up front>?

Why??? Just go with the stock look since you had the wrong size before.

Yeah but I'd rather have skinnier tires up front. I don't really want them to look thick and bulky like the rear ones.

Anyone else run a 225 on an IROC rim?

if you want to run 225 up front then go with 225/60/16 it is the same height as 245/50/16 just skinner put it like this if you want to go skinner bur stay the same height add 10 to the first number and subtract 5 from the second number really easy just like the mustang have 245/45/17 is the same size as 245/50/16 but i would go same size all the way around it looks so much better but if you dont i would put 235/55/16 that would look alittle better just a tad bit smaller hope that helps Daniel

Just posted my 3000 mile review of the Falken Zeix ZE-512s I put on my 'bird.

Really like them, and they were reasonably priced compared to other tires in the same size.

Ok I did manage to find a 235/55 r16.

This might be a bit taller than my 235/50/ r16 that I have up front. What do y'all think. Will it be noticable?

Please don't use his method or his punctuation (or lack of).

Do a google or read this

An no 245/50/16 are not the same size as 225/60/16 nor are 235/55/16. I'm just talking height wise too, they are close but not exact.

245/50/16 is a 25.7 inch tall tire while a 225/60/16 is 26.6 inch tire.

And yes a 235/50 will be shorter than a 235/55 and people that look closely will notice.
