4 gen rear end in 3 gen - what wheels

Hi to everyone on the board.

I bought 1982 TA 305 carbed a month ago or so.

Last owner did a swap for a 4rd gen rear end (3,42 LS), which is great but... now my wheels and tires stick outside the car , and it seams to bother the police. I've got stock 16x8 rims with 255 rubber.

So I need to buy new rims with bigger ET

My question is what is the diference in lenght in 3gen and 4gen rear end. From what I know the maximum backspacing in 3gen is around 5.85".
Since I got a bit wider rear end what ET should I look for if I want to put on 17x8 ( will wider fit at all - witout sticking outside ).

thanks in advance
Paul

When you buy your wheels just by the rears for use on a 4th gen rear.

the problem is that 4gen is wider then 3 gen so i got less space. in other words I have to buy wheels with bigger offset I think.

What is the standard offset in wheels for 4gen ?

all you need is regular 4th gen wheels, with them the wheels will look like it did before(not sticking out at all)

4th gen rears are rouhgly 4" wider than a 3rd gen wheel. You will need to run 4th gen/vette wheels or live with your stockers giving your car that "skateboarding" look. LT1 and LS1 rears are not the same width though. IIRC the LT1 rear is a tad wider (1") so some people use a 1/2" spacer if they run LS1 wheels. I just installed my 4th gen rear but forgot to take pictures of the width difference.

I would leave the "skateboard look" - as you called it. But the reason I need to do something about it is that twice in one week cops wanted to take my papers away for that. So 4 gen/vette wheels is a good option. Will i fit 17x9.5" under there ? and what Offset I should look for then.

FE those:

Torq-Thrust II 505 Series Wheel

back :

Size: 17'' x 9-1/2''
Bolt Circle: 5 x 4-3/4''
Rear Spacing: 7''

front :

Torq-Thrust II 505 Series Wheel
Size: 17'' x 8''
Bolt Circle: 5 x 4-3/4''
Rear Spacing: 4''

You had to be doing something else other than driving a car with wheels protruding from the wheel wells to get the attention of the police. And you must be gullible to believe that you could loose your license or registration for wheels protruding from wheel wells.

Something does not add up here.

Nope, The rules in Poland are diferent, you cannot have protruding wheels, they specifilcy said that I have to change that or they will take my registration, not lincence. Im not the only one with problems like that here. One of my friends had to do something like that to take cops of his back.

my wheels are situated wider - around 1-1.5" than those on the picture.

another example - one friend just finished a car - and to have some peace on the road from the cops he had to do something like this

but I dont want to change the shape of the body.

What dumba-s-s reason is given for that?

BTW, looking at your pictures it does not even look like your rear wheel is protruding past the lip of the fenderwell. Maybe it is just the picture but it looks likes like your wheel is just in line with the lip.

this black bird is not mine. I got around 1.5" wider wheels setup on each side. So you can see that they stick out from a bigger distance.

The reason they give me : You will splatter mud and stuff on the car behind you, and that could result in traffic accident.

beacouse I cant just go to autoshop and try out few diferent rims and rubber setup, all rims in europe have diferent bolt setup, and I have to buy rims in US and I want to make sure they will fit.

So does anyone know will 17" x 9.5 fit in the back ( without sticking out ) ? or do I have to buy 8"

and do I have to buy spacer for front to put 17" x 8 ??

You just need a wheel with the proper backsapcing. 3rd gen wheels have a tremendous amount of back spacing. You can run an 11" wide wheel if you get the proper spacing.
