this backspacing work? (sorry, search down)

I posted a q in appearance and detailing forum about rims and looks/style, but I want to post in here about backspacing.

I found a set of rims that are 17". One pair is 17x7" with 4.0 bs and the other pair is 17x8 with 4.5bs. Does this seem correct for thirdgens, a '88 iroc in particular? Keep in mind my car is also lowered with sportline springs. Thanks!

ok I've found out what my options are;

17x7 4.0 bs
17x8 4.5 bs
17x10 5.0 bs

what would be the best fit for an '88 IROC? I want something that is close to stock, yet have a nice deep dish to them. Being able to put on some fat tires wouldn't hurt either, especially in the rear.

I'm not terribly concerned if they don't 'tuck' all the way in, having the tires stick out a bit wouldn't hurt especially in the rear.

Of the 3 listed only the 17x8 with 4.5 backspacing would look right, The 17x7 with 4" would sit in to far up front and the 17x10 would stick out too far. 17x10 with 6" BS woud be better.

FYI If you go to www.google.com and go to advanced search you can search just thirdgen.org in the same manner you would in a search on this site..........jt

Brisk,

17x8 on a 4.5bs is the same as stock pretty much, reall y everything you mentioned are zero offset set ups.

17x10 on a 5" will stick out a mile, I've heard 5.5 is a minimum, I have 5.75 on a 10" in the rear of my car and I have no rubbing issues, but it does stick out slightly( looks good to me) but if you want the 'tucked in' look you will need a 6" or a 6.25" or more - but this could require some mods possibly.

17x7 will be a little skinny, maybe even to narrow to fit a 235.

with the 17x7 and 17x8 in wheels you would probably want to run a 225 in front and a 245 in the rear - It won't look bad at all, just if you want that wide look, this might not give you exactly what you want, that price is good though

If you push it and can get all 17x8's you could possibly run a 255 tire without problems. either a 40, or 45 series -

ok well from your advice and being able to use the search through google, I think this is what I'm going to order;

Front- 17x8 4.5" bs
Rear -17x10 5.75" bs

This sounds correct, doesn't it? Then I can run 245/45/17 fronts (or similar) and run something like 275/40/17 rears.. yes?

Again guys, thanks for the replies.. I'd be lost without ya!

Those are the rim sizes I have. I run a 255-45 on the front and a 285-40 on the rear - I wanted as much width as possible, and I have no rubbing issues. here is the catch my tires size runs at 26.1 inches tire hieght. stock is 25.7 inches. I think if you run a 245-45, and a 275-40 you will be at the stock hieght of 25.7.

My speedometer is off about 2~3 mph low at say 80mph at 65 it's like 1.5mph off or so due to the increased hieght. but you will have a slightly lower profile.

I wish I could have used 10" rims in the front and ran a large tire but I couldn't find anyone who had done it sucessfully or without some major mods , a 9.5 on a 275 I've heard will work, but never a 10 easily. and the distributor said into doesn't make a 9" or a 9.5"

What you listed above will work - no problems what so ever.

What about the different offsets from front to rear on the IROCs?

If your going to go with the 10" in the rear I would go with a 6.00" bs or 6.25". This way you would be able to tuck a bit more and not have to worry too much about rubbing. Personally I think this would look much better than the 5.75". To truly get the perfect look, at least in my opion though, would to be get the 17x8" all around with 4.5" bs. This way the wheels will tuck nice like stock all the way around and you will still have about 3.5" of lip. Too bad they aren't offering a 9", that way you would be able to stuff a 275 in the back and still have a wheel that tucks like stock.

well the 10" rim was only avaliable with a 5.73" backspacing so I hope it will work well.. they're already been ordered and paid for! I'm sure they'll be fine.. I don't mind having the rears stick out just a bit, makes for a more aggressive stance IMO. I'll post some pics when I get them bolted on.

Any advice/recommondations for tires?
