4th gen rack solution proposal

Hi !

I tried to install 4gh Gen Rack to my '91 Formula and faced that infamous problem with much wider turning circle.

Here is my suggestion for correction of the problem.

cut off ear which is connected to tie rod on one knuckle, make a cut on another, but close to the center of the knuckle, then fasten them together with two bolts as shown at attached picture.

I have concerns on reliability side. Weak point are holes and bolts. What are your opinions on that ?

Thats cast iron and holes will be alot harder than you think

By changin that you change the steering ratio too...

Id suggest against that or find a jy spindle with a shorter arm length that still uses the strut as the upper mounting point vs the upper/lower A-arm setup

I dont have a problem with making holes in cast iron, I only have worries on reliability

Of course, if I could find another spindle, I'd go fot it, but I have no idea, what kind of car can have it

Do you mean junk yard by JY ? If yes, then its not an option, not many yards here

I think it is worth a try, as long as you have a back up. Go for it and let us know how it turns out. Just make sure the wheel is still at the right angle and everything, and that the tie rod end has plenty of thread contact still.

where are you mounting the rack? can you post pics? i've heard the 4th gen racks are too long for us and that the fox mustang or pinto racks are a better fit....i want the rack system, but need to see how you guys mounted it....thanks

I'm not suggesting you alter the steering arm in anyway, due to potential major problems with accidents in the future.

but.....rather do what you are proposing, you might be able to build another arm and attach it to the knuckle, like older GM cars used to have. The spindles were the same, left to right, and you needed a left and right steering arm that bolted on to each spindle to make them left and right.

if there is enough meat on the knuckle after you cut off the arm, you can bolt on a piece of steel like 1/2" thick or thicker, that has the right taper drilled into it, and then bolt that to new holes drilled in the 'meat'

to see what I mean seach on the internet for early chevy, 55-57 comes to mind, and early chevelle and camaro. check out places that sell new parts, and they'll probably have pictures of what i'm talking about.

is it possable to cut off the ear , drill and tap the knuckle, and put an ajust. rod end in it's place???
