Wheel Widening Services

A friend recently mentioned that he had heard of companies that can widen your existing wheels.

This would be ideal for me as I want wider tyres but want to keep my 88 IROC rims as I think they suit the car the best. All the IROC replica rims I've seen (which are sadly the older IROC style) are available in 17 or 18 inch sizes, but as the stock 8 inch width. So that's no use.

I'd like to keep my later style IROC rim and have it 10 inches wide.

Has anyone any experience of these wheel widening companies?
Can they really widen my IROC rim safely?

do a search on that, I asked it a while ago, and got a handful of responses. There's a few companies in the states that can do it, but shipping for you would get absolutely nuts!
they can widen, or can make your fronts skinnier and rears fatter.

Cool. Any idea how much they run?

edit: oh. For $200 a wheel, I'd rather just buy some.

The other problem you'll run into is that 255's are the wides tire readily availalbe. I think BFG makes one tire thats bigger but it's like a 295 with a 50 series side wall which makes for a 28" tall tire. Mid 80's vetts came with 9" wide wheels and used 255's, thats about as wide as you can get with 16's unless you go to race slicks.

I didn't think to check tyre availablility.
Well that's another plan out the window...

Looks like I'm gonna be stuck with going for an 18x10 inch Z06 rim.
Pity, as the 2 stripe IROC rim suits the car SO well and is "period correct"...

Yea exactly. I'm not wild about most aftermarket wheels though. If I didn't have my 15x8's, i'd get some stock 15x7 5 spoke Camaro wheels. You know, the dime a dozen Z28 1985 sorta guys? Then widen just the rears to 15x9 or 15x10, and use 295+ rubber out back. $400 or so is cheaper than aftermarket wheels. Plus I can have HUGE meats and the car would still look sorta stock.

Re: Wheel Widening Services

So far, pricing has ranged from $150 - $350 per wheel. The only problem I am having is finding a wider 16" tire that will make it worth doing. I can get a nice drag radial in stock size now. It seems it is a major disadvantage vs. running a 15" or 17" rim.
