4th gen front suspension on a 3rd gen

I plan on putting one on my 3rd gen because i have 4th gen wheels on it and i am getting bad bump steer in the front. Condsidering i have it all apart anyway, and i got a really good deal for all the parts ($100) i don't think its a bad idea. I figure it shouldn't be to hard cause i have a plasma cutter and a welder so anything that doesn't line up i could make line up .

So has anyone done this before or am i just and wasting my time?

Eric

GM had a few test cars with C4 front double wishbone suspension and rear IRS in some 3rd gen camaros. I dont how much different C4 and 4th gen camaros suspension are though.

But you wont know if you can do it until you drop stock suspension and k member and try and line up the 4th gen stuff. If its not even close, you can just put the stock stuff back in. No biggie.

Just dont start cutting away till you know you can make it fit.

No.

Not even remotely dimly nearly within a whiff of a glimpse of a trace of similarity.

The 3rd gen uses a single CA and a strut. The 4th gen uses 2 CAs and a shock.

I suppose with enough money and acetylene, anytihng is possible, almost; this would be one of those swaps that test that hypothesis.

There was one guy who was talking about this before. 83_Fbody or something? The guy with the weird body kit (homemade out of fiberglass) and the lifted ranchero in his sig pic. I don't think he ended up doing it because it's SUCH a hassle.

the only too real differences that i saw was were the k member sits on the frame which doesn't look too off to me, and the location of the shock mounting to the fenderwells. It looks like the 4th gen has them closer to the engine by about an inch so i could just cut out what i need to with that and weld in a box metal frame... im going to give it a try so we'll see what happens... the project won't really start til it gets warmer out so i'll keep you guys posted as it goes, thanks for the opinions

oh and the problem with that would be that it wouldn't solve the bump steer issue and the outside tire wear issue that i have because the a-arms on the 3rd gen are too short...thanks for your opinion though.

Re: 4th gen front suspension on a 3rd gen

Realizing this is very old.....

Since it would require fabricating a new front end, why would you even go through the effort to utilize the craptastic 4th gen stuff? Just start from scratch a build a full race-type front suspension. - The k-member and lower control arms would be the least of your worries, where would you mount the upper control arm? - Even if you did go through with it, you would still have the same stock geometry problems that the stock 3rd gen suspension has.

A properly set-up bump-steer kit will solve all the problems.

Re: 4th gen front suspension on a 3rd gen

a guy died this, there are pics floating around of the car, i've never seen "in progress pics" but im pretty sure he cut the entire front off the 3rd gen and 4th gen and swapped them. These cars have an entirely different front suspension design and nothing will bolt up, not even remotely close. You would really have to cut the front off the car and graft the 4th gen one to it. And thats a lot of very complicated and in depth work.

If you really want that front suspension setup, but a 4th gen.

Re: 4th gen front suspension on a 3rd gen

^^^ yep. If I dig around in my saved stuff I could tell you who. Very custom, very clean, convertible with the complete 4th gen front(LS and T56 included) grafted to the 3rd gen body.

Ikillricecars - I wasn't trying to be a ****. Spending ridiculous amounts of time/money/energy into altering something just to be "different" just doesn't make much sense to most people. There is no shock/awe factor when most people probably won't realize anything has been changed and those that do(3rd gen gurus) will see no reason as to why you would make such a change. It is also a heavier design, so no real-world performance advantage either. If you want to, then more power to you(I highly reccomend the grafted on front clip approach, it will be the easiest/least expensive route). Just noting the time/money would be much better spent elsewhere.
