about to purchase wheels, one last adapter question
alright im getting ready to purchase some wheels that will need adapters. up front the wheels are 17x8.5 +56 offset with 245/45/17 tires. Ive seen some pictures of cars with these wheels and they always seem to stick out up front. what size adapter should i use? i was told either 1.7'' or 2''...the less they stick out, the better but 1.7'' adapters seem to be much more expensive and hard to find than 2 inch
for the rear: 17x9.5 +54 (or +38) offset with 285/40/17 tires. im assuming +54 offset is will only work. ive also been told 1.7 or 2'' adapters
so what size adapters should i go with to not stick out, especially the front? also, if i need 1.7'' adapters or some other odd size where can i find the best price?

This is from a previous thread where i helped someone out...he had no fitment issues whatsoever and the wheels didnt stick out too far
just change the math and apply it to your wheels
with a 50 mm offset...thats WAY too much backspacing...a good stock backspacing is 4.63" you can go about an inch deeper without problems in the rear...in the front the stock backspacing is 4" even
SOOO...here is how we fig out what you need...you will need adapters...check out adaptitusa.com
1" = 25.4mm
9" wide wheels
9/2 = 4.5" + a 50MM offset (50mm = 1.96") = 6.46" of backspacing for the front...you def have to push that back out...so add a 2.3" thick ADAPTER (SPACERS ARE UNSAFE) and now your backspcing is 4.16" and youre at nearly stock backspacing and NO RUBBING and barely any excess frontspacing
NOW for the rear you can prob tuck those a little more if youd like
once again 9/2 = 4.5" + 1.96" = 6.46" of backspacing
stock = 4.63" of backspacing with about an 1"-1.5" of extra clearance
6.46 - 1" thick adapter = 5.46" of backspacing which should tuck nicely and not rub
overall
youd need to get adapters 5X4.75 to 5X4.75
2X 2.3" thick for the front
2X 1" thick for the rears
once again the reason for such thickness on the fronts is bc the fronts are used to having NO offset on a 8" wide rim so with 50mm of offset on a 9" wide rim youre gonna have to compensate and space the rim back out to reduce that backspacing

Ok so i decided to just be the nice guy that i am and do the math for you real quick to save you some time
here goes...
8.5" wide fronts 56 mm offset
9.5" wide rears 38 mm offset
1" = 25.4mm
stock backspacing is 4" front and 4.38" rear
FRONTS
8.5"/2 = 4.25" + 56mm (2.2") = 6.45"
a 2" spacer would push the offset back to 4.45" of backspacing...might be close but i think you have the space available or try to get a 2.25" adapter
THEREFORE, you would have 4.05" of frontspacing... .05 more than stock
REARS
9.5/2 = 4.75 + 38mm (1.49") = 6.24" of backspacing you have atleast an inch to tuck without modification...so you need to get close to 5.38"...so 1" spacer brings you to 5.25" of backspacing with 4.25" of front spacing as opposed to stock front spacing of 3.62"...i dont think .6" will be very noticable
you cant go less than 1" adapter anyhow so you are best off with:
2 to 2.25" spacer for the fronts
1" spacer for the rears
the tires you selected shouldnt cause a problem that a little inner well massaging couldnt fix in the rears incase those 285s possible rub a bit

My AR Rebels have a +24mm offset and to get it to the 0mm offset these cars used I needed about a 1" adapter. They are 17x9 with a 6" BS. After the adapter they'll have barely any offset and 5" of back space and looking at them on the car 1" won't make them stick out. I'm getting 275/40/17 tires all around. Are you sure you can use a 285 tire? I was going to get those until someone told me they were to wide for a 9" wide wheel.
Don't know if that helps you or not though. Numbers aren't always what matters, stick 'em on the car and see what looks good to the eye too before you spend $100+ on spacers.

285s will work just fine on a 9.5" wide rim...i run 295 30 19s on 9.5" wide so no prob unless you run "run flat" tires bc they have stiffer sidewalls and are harder to mount (I work at discount tire (2.5 years) so I know this) but should still be fine
calculations are the foundation to any fitment issue and should always be where you start your estimates...guesstimating by test fitting w/o adapter or some measuring device is reckless and will only lead to error
if i was you...i would run a smaller 245 45 17 on the front and 275 40 17 on the rear...my main concern with your setup is rubbing up front...you dont need a 275 on the front of your car and the 245 will give you more clearance

I missed he was using a 9.5" wide wheel in the back, I thought it was using 8.5" all around, not just for the front. Too late for that, I already ordered 275s all aroung. The guy at DC said a 245 was the minimum size for a 9" wide wheel and I wanted to get the best handling. Hopefully they won't rub. The two people I talked to who have these wheels are using 275s all around but one is using a 9/16" spacer and the other is using a 3/4" spacer.

38 the 1" adapter will be cheaper in some cases...ebay etc...
just dont use a spacer..they are dangerous and reputable shops will refuse to work on your car...make sure you buy quality adapters

I don't know them personally, I found them on this site. That's why I almost didn't order these wheels because I didn't want to use a spacer and longer studs. After talking to 5 or 6 tire/wheel shops all telling me I'd need a 1.5" - 2" adapter for these to fit one finally told me the truth that to get the 0mm offset I needed I'd only need a 1" spacer/adapter and they'd fit. I found 1" adapters on eBay and ordered the wheels and they've been sitting since Nov. I think. I finally got the money for the tires and ordered those and the adapters last week. The tires would have been at DC on Friday but FedEX lost 2 of them and DC had to order two more and the adapters will be here Wednesday. Hopefully the tires won't rub, but we'll see I guess. I originally wanted 255 tires since they are 26" in diameter (stock size so the speedo/odometers wouldn't get messed up at all) but I thought it look funny with a tires that was the minimum size for the wheel so I went ahead and got the meats. And yes I know the 275s are only .3" or something like that smaller than stock.

The 1/2" more frontspacing he's talking about for the front means the wheel's edge will stick out 1/2" more than the stock wheel.

it really doesnt get much simpler but I prob could have taken more time to word better...i did you calcs fast
your stock front wheels have 4" front and 4" of backspacing bc they are 8" wide with 0mm offset
your rears have 3.62" of frontspacing and 4.38" of backspacing bc they are 8" wide with 16mm offset
With your new wheels/tires
w/a 2" spacer on the front your new frontspacing would be 4.05" and backspacing would be 4.45" (theres some chance you might rub) so you might want to go with a 2.25" thick adapter
w/a 2.25" adapter you are looking at
frontspacing: 4.3"
backspacing: 4.2"
(HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) it will look good with no chance of rubbing
w/a 1" spacer on the rears your new backspacing would be 5.25" w/a frontspacing of 4.25"...now the stock front spacing for your stock wheels is again..3.62"...so you are pushing the tires outward/adding frontspacing in the amount of .6" or so...which wont be very noticeable

comes to 850 dollars for the wheels, adapters, and shipping. could i get custom wheels for that?
